WORCESTER – A clerk at a Vernon Street grocery store Saturday shot a man who held a knife near a customer’s neck during an attempted robbery, police said.

According to a news release, witnesses said a man walked into No Name Grocery II at 49 Vernon St. before 8:40 p.m. holding a large knife.

The man, later identified as 26-year-old Juan Ahorrio of Worcester, went behind one of two female customers in the store, police said, “and placed his arm that was holding the knife around her neck.”

The clerk, who was not identified by police, pulled out his handgun.

“At this time the customer fell to the ground,” police wrote. “With the customer out of the way the clerk fired three rounds at the suspect.”

Police said the man was hit, dropped the knife and ran out of the store. The clerk chased after him, ordered him to the ground and went back to check on the customers, police said.

When police arrived around 8:40 p.m. they observed Worcester EMS treating Mr. Ahorrio for three gunshot wounds. The paramedics said they’d been driving by when they saw the man on the sidewalk; his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police questioned the clerk and the two women in the store, none of whom were injured. They confiscated the clerk’s handgun and his license to carry pending further investigation.

Mr. Ahorrio, of 91 Perry Ave., was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon and armed assault with intent to rob. He was booked at the hospital, police said, and will be arraigned after he is released.

Police said their investigation remains active and that additional charges could follow.

Staff members at the store declined to speak to a reporter and photographer who visited the store Sunday morning.

City records show the store is owned by Victor B. Lara of Worcester. An attempt to reach Mr. Lara by phone was not successful.

Staff writers Lisa Eckelbecker and Mark Sullivan contributed to this report.

Typical mass. Take away the good guy gear.
Let you know if we care to give it back.

I’d love to know the cops reaction to call. “High five” or “oooooo you’re in trouble....!”

Will tell you everything you need to know about the dark underbelly of Massachusetts.

It's truly a riot. Mr. Juan Ahorrio hasn't made it to Turtleboy yet, but he seems like he should be a candidate.

Well it is Massachusetts. Here in my area the guy would be interviewed on the news after they awarded him a medal. He had better hope his trigger pull was Massachusetts compliant.

His trigger pull does not need to be compliant. He could have a trigger job done legally after purchase, or purchased from an LEO or any number of other ways.

In any case the police will have his gun stored with someone that will charge an exorbitant price for storage. Once he is allowed his rights back it will cost more to get his gun than it is worth. The gun will be sold in New Hampshire by the guy that stored it.

These go to eleven.

Hey I was joking. Just pointing out the absurdity of the gun laws in Massachusetts.

"his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening."

The clerk needs to get some more range time in.

LOL didn't realize it was a joke. We have shitty laws but there is a lot of misinformation out there about them.

So they confiscated his permit. Roll Eyes When, if ever, will he get it back? Do they get a search warrant for his house and remove his other firearms, if any? The aftermath of a shooting is a really bad time to have to go unarmed.
