Never tried a propane tank, but we shot the heck out of of a failed pressure tank from an RO system the other day. I’d be concerned about a propane tank being a little more “reactive”.

The last time I tried (more than a decade ago) to buy another conversion kit, I was told that some jackass who had bought one took the pop off pressure relief out of it, plugged that port, then proceeded to overfill it. After the soldered on patch* blew off the tank and injured his leg, he sued and got a lot of money. Therefore, no more five or ten dollar kits (whatever they were, they were cheap. Instead, the auto parts store was happy to sell you an air tank for $45 (then).

*With at least some of those smaller tanks, a small, thinner disk is soldered onto the tank over a hole in the thicker tank wall. Apparently, the idea is that if there is an onverpressure, instead of the whole tank exploding and sending shrapnel everywhere, just the small patch flies off.
