Not wanting to derail the watch thread in the gallery, and knowing that you have serious knowledge of "vintage" and horological goods, I'm writing to ask for information on a particular clock. It's a United model 811 ship clock. There's an image here: http://tinyurl.com/United811clock. Some surfing today gives me estimates from 1938 to the mid-50's. I can't find a date or date code on the example I have. What do you know? Thank you! God bless America.

Design cues would say '50s or '60s to me. But I don't know, I'm just estimating by style. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

This forum page has some information that suggests that United may go back as far as 1905.

Wow. 1905. Interesting! I need, too, to find someone who can get this clock running smoothly again. Nobody local to me can tackle it. It runs, just not smoothly -- speeds up and slows down occasionally. I like to tinker, but I'm not bold enough to tear into this one. God bless America.

Does yours have patent number 2,140,365 ? It seems one person in that thread ID'd that as being filed in 1934. I'm not really a clock person. Hell, I'm not THAT knowledgeable on watches in a horological sense. I just dig em, so I know makes and models pretty well. Good luck!

I'll have to look -- possibly! I did download patent drawings a while back, but I believe that's on my PC at work. I can't believe this particular clock is that old, but I do believe it with respect to the mechanical design. I can't find a sticker or label or mark on this one anywhere. God bless America.
