My daughter occasionally fosters kittens for the local shelter
They always get adopted quickly, she posts them on social media as “premium hand raised kittens”

The last batch was all grays, 5 to be exact

The runt had a white chest and paws and had to be bottle fed when the others were already eating wet food. She cried all the time and was generally high maintenance.

About a week before they were to go back to be adopted the grandson opened the freezer ( new style on the bottom of the fridge) to get a popsicle. Unbeknownst to him or us the kitten crawled up behind the drawer and got shut in the freezer.

She was it there at least an hour we think. I heard a meow from the kitchen area at some point, but with 5 kittens in the house that wasn’t unusual

Something didnt seem right in the back of my head so I want to the kitchen and looked around.
Nothing in the cupboard or under the sink, the I checked the freezer.
Didn’t see her at first, she was balled up in the back corne.

She had evacuated herself and has snot frozen on her face and was barely breathing.
We wrapped her in a heated blanket but saw little improvement in 15 minutes.
Daughter heated some kitten formula and started dripping it down her throat.
After an hour or so she started meowing and shaking.

At about the 2 hour mark she jumped down and started playing with her brothers and sisters.

After this whole episode, and her being the runt and a little “special” I couldn’t let her go to another home, so we adopted her.

We also kept her big brother, who kind of adopted us instead of the other way around.

I told the daughter no more foster kittens for a while.

The wife just calls her Baby

She’s a cutie. Scary story and glad for the outcome.

I have a sort of similar story, although no temperature extremes were involved.

A few years ago, SIGforum member paragon needed a new home for one of her cats because she (the cat, not paragon) was terrorizing her mother and siblings, so Shadow came to live with us.

We have an attached garage and the air handler for the HVAC system is on the garage side of a wall that separates house from garage. The air handler is elevated and the plenum chamber for air return is at floor level. This chamber is somewhere around 2' x 2' x 2' and the air filter holder is on the wall, hinged, so the filter is easy to replace from the house side.

I replaced the filter, did not notice anything unusual, closed the filter holder, and went out to do some grocery shopping.

When I returned, I could hear the cat calling out, but could not find her for a while. Finally traced the cries to the HVAC air return, opened the filter holder, and a furry black rocket came shooting out. Unharmed, but not happy at having been confined for a couple of hours.

Baby is not a name for Freezer cat.

For fucks sake give her a name fitting a cat who survived her ordeal, not some dirty dancing mofo who can't be put in a corner.

Icy, Freeze, Cube, anything but baby...

Tell your wife to get with it Smile

I had a kitten sneak by me when I was putting clothes in the dryer. Sat down to eat, luckily a few feet from the dryer. Heard a few thumps that were weird for the kind of clothes I’d put in. Yeah, he took a few rounds of tumble dry. Thankfully, aside from clearly being dizzy for a few minutes, he was fine. Scared me to death. I just knew I’d killed him.

I dunno, Baby kinda makes sense. It is short for:

Baby It's Cold Inside (the freezer).

which is a riff on "Baby It's Cold Outside". Wink

I'm not a big fan of cats, I don't dislike them, I just like dogs better. I am a solid fan of any animal, especially those that are mistreated or in dire need. I will happily pet a cat that buddy's up to me but I've been swatted a few times which turns me off.

I was anti cat for most of my life
Both grandfathers were rabbit hunters and did not have house cats
They always said outside cats would kill baby rabbits

Only had dogs until I got married and kids got old enough to want pets
The first cat we had was a loner and wouldn’t get near anyone but my daughter

These foster kittens have changed my mind

The two we have now have big personalities and run to the door if we’ve been away

Cats are kind of independent contractors, and dogs more like dependent children

We can go out of town for a couple days and just put out food and water and they are fine

Our Yorkie has to have a baby sitter or be boarded, it’s a whole production

That's how it happens with cats. One comes along and...

With me it was the cats that came with my wife. I wasn't anti-cat so much as I didn't feel the need to have them in my life. Then the male of the brother and sister pair that came with my wife decided I would be his new best friend.

That happens often with our cats.

I suspect most people who don't like cats never had an opportunity to bond with a really cool cat.

Down here in Huntington, we're in the same boat as you. We lost our Peanut in July. We fostered a family of five (one mom, four kittens ... all feral) at the end of summer.
Two of them really latched on to us.
We found homes for the other three, and kept our two.
They have absolutely changed our outlook around the house for the better, watching them go through the ordeals and education that all cats have to go through.
They are now the focal point of our household. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Outstanding. Runts are the best. I had a little black one years ago. Fully grown, 6 pounds. She would wake me up for breakfast by sitting on my chest and purring. If I didn't move fast enough, she would stick just one claw right on the tip of my nose. Worked every time.

Damn, I miss that cat.

I can’t imagine how dull life would be around the house without our cats. My wife and I have both experienced health issues as of late. The cats bring a lot of stress relief. Here comes one now as I type!
