Find a shop that sells authentic Afghan, hand knotted wool rugs. They will last forever, are capable of being cleaned, and have a unique look. The downside, is like any quality handmade product, they aren't cheap.

FYI, Woot recently had a big sale on a variety of different sized area rugs and runners. Might not be quite the quality you want, but some good deals. And by the looks of some and prices, decent quality. I picked up a runner.
Just checked...sale til Feb 16.

A good place to find them are estate sales. Obviously some or most will be cheaper stuff but I've seen some pretty nice older hand made ones in excellent condition and they generally don't bring much. I recently picked up a beautiful small one hand woven on wool warp and weft for $25, most are wool face but woven on cotton.

I bought two really nice quality large (11x14or so) thick wool rugs off Amazon. Only issue is the wool ones really shed for a little while. Mohawk Homes was the brand on at least one of them. Put good nonslip pads down too.
Just remembered something. We bought a house years ago (40+) with beautiful hardwood floors but needed area rugs in spots. Went to local carpet store and picked carpeting from roll stock. The store cut and finished the rugs (backing & edges) to specified sizes. Not sure if that's even possible anymore but worked out well then.
