I picked up this bad boy at an auction. I have a few questions that I figured I'd submit to the forum brain.

1. Any idea what approximate year this was made?

2. It came with this dressing tool. Obviously, it needs new wheels. Are these things in standard sizes? I've never had to replace a set.

3. When running, or spinning down, there is a noise that isn't constant. See the video. It starts immediately and stops at 22 seconds. Is that a bearing? Something else? It spins very smoothly and takes around 3-4 minutes to come to a complete stop. I don't notice any wobble. I also pulled both wheel guards, cleaned out all of the buildup, and checked the wheels for tightness.

A similar question was asked and solved here
https://forum.toolsinaction.co...date-of-manufacture/

But sadly no serial number info (the MM815 portion of yours) is shown for your model here, so I'd guess 1993 or a few years earlier.

Sounds like a bearing. Should be standard sizing and available anywhere but I would buy something name brand like Nachi, NSK, SKF or Timken. I've had good luck on epay for good Newb-old stock bearing.

Make sure you do the ring test (google it) on those wheels or anyone's you don't know the history of.

The wheels should be standard sizing as long as the dimensions match 10" dia. 1" wide, etc. The arbor (3/4" it appears) can accommodate larger wheel bores with bushings that will usually be supplied or reused.

That is a nice unit and stand for sure.

Thanks for that, bald1! I figured they'd may have a manual, but I didn't expect that kind of detail.

Good info. I looked it up and will do it tomorrow! I'll also grab a manual to look into bearing replacement.

Thanks!

I'm pretty happy with the base, too. Whoever made it did a good job welding it, and they even painted it and wired up an outlet with the light. Now the outlet, grinder, and light all use one cord.

I have an extra set of those star wheels if you want them you can have them. BTW, they should last a very long (many years) time if you use them properly. The idea is to let the wheels dress the grinding wheel by allowing it to crush against the wheel with minimal force applied. Those have been used too hard, thereby grinding the star wheel points off them. Also, the abrasive wheel itself should be used to wear evenly. I probably only ever dressed a wheel after someone used it improperly, by gouging it or loading it up with something which shouldn't have been ground. Forty-plus years in machine shop I finally had to replace a set on my dresser about ten years ago.

Anyway, my email is in my profile if you want them...

It was just over $300.

vinnybass- thanks for the offer! Email inbound.

From what I’ve been seeing about using them, if they are shooting sparks, you aren’t pressing firmly enough.
