Hello! Wife and I are spending next week in Austin. Getting mileage out of our timeshare. I know the place is known for live music, and I’ve read it’s the taco capital of the U.S. What should we do while in Austin? Thank you! Jim That which doesn't kill you only makes you stronger

Fight traffic and fend off the Liberals! You might look at things to do in the Hill Country--lots of things there. Do a web search on "Austin, Texas attractions". flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

Second the Salt Lick. Was there just a few weeks ago and they still have the best brisket around.

Take a short 45 minute drive to Gruene Hall one evening. Maybe hit the San Marcos Outlet Mall for the wife on the way down. She can shop and you can check out eye candy...

I run trains! |
Take a drive out to Fredericksburg for some shopping on Main St, visit the National Museum of the Pacific War, and eat some authentic German food. Maybe head up to Enchanted Rock Natural Area. Success always occurs in private, and failure in full view. Complacency sucks…

Put a MAGA and a Trump 2020 bumper sticker on your car and drive around the UT campus and the state capital. Record the experience and post here.

Drive out to Lockhart for a day of BBQ.

Drive down to San Antonio and spend a couple of days there. Fun town with great tex-mex food and a lot more conservative people there. Jim ________________________ "If you can't be a good example, then you'll have to be a horrible warning" -Catherine Aird

Good brisket, but not the best. Franklins is better. Go to nearby Lockhart and try Blacks and Kreutze's. In Austin, the LBJ library is interesting. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

I would suggest a tour of the Circuit of the Americas. Nickname: COTA. World class race track, hosts Formula One and MotoGP. One of the most technical tracks in the world. What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

...do justly, love mercy, walk humbly... |
We went to Austin last fall for a long weekend. We walked around the University of TX campus, listened to some live music (didn't care much for the famous 6th Street...pretty nasty, in my opinion), saw the bats at Congress Ave Bridge (may be too late in the year right now?), went down to Salt Lick (highly recommend...we didn't have the time or patience to wait all morning in line for Franklin's), and walked around the Driskill Hotel and had a few drinks in the lounge...it's really cool and beautiful. I would ask around when you get there...if the bats are still swarming to feed and migrate, it's fascinating...if you like that kind of stuff. We'll go back at some point, I'm sure.

To add to jhe888’s two Lockhart BBQ recommendations, I would add Smitty’s as well.

Now in Florida |
Check and see if it's not too late in the year to see the bats on the Congress Ave. Bridge. It's pretty amazing to see.

Tour the Capitol tour. Some think the building seen is everything, but there is a large portion of the complex underground. The Bob Bullock Texas History Museum is cool. If you want a really good barbecue and the experience to go along with it, drive a tiny bit south to the Salt Lick in Driftwood. If you want a pretty view while eating, go to the Oasis there on Lake Travis. There are some relatively nice restaurants on the river - also with a pretty view. Even though I live about an hour away from Austin, I prefer to go into north San Antonio which is just a hair closer. It is far less liberal and it is pretty since it is at the edge of the Texas Hill Country. Retired Texas Lawman
