Having said that, one has to admire how far Teasla has pushed the envelope of acceptance for EVs. Without the network of Tesla charging stations, owning an EV really wouldn't even come up on most folk's radar

I am looking at a sub $20k vehicle. If there were a Lucid or Rivian in that ballpark I’d probably be looking there first.

Based on my brother’s trade in. It will be a while before a Rivian is in that price point. BMW dealership gave him 64k for his R1S

I have had a Model 3 Long Range AWD since November. I bought it brand new when they were clearing out the ’24’s to make room for the ‘25’s. The discounts were unbeatable. It’s a great little car. The tech is cool. Built in YouTube and video games to preoccupy the wife when charging.

Charging at Superchargers is rather quick. Some of the older Supercharger stations are slower, or shared power between two cars, but overall it’s pretty quick. Usually enough time to grab a soda and use the bathroom.

I have driven 6983 miles and spent $408 in charging. Over $150 of that is at Superchargers. If you’re charging at home, the cost per mile is nothing, depending on your energy costs. I pay $0.12 per kWh at home. Superchargers in this area are around $0.48 per kWh. Even with supercharging, it’s half the cost of gasoline. That’s also factoring 30 mpg, which there is no way I would be getting, the way I drive. It would probably be 20 mpg at best.

Speaking of the way I drive, for the first six months I owned the car, I was matting the accelerator everytime I went anywhere. The “smiles per gallon” were immeasurable. In the last couple months, I have backed off the skinny pedal some, but if I was really trying to save costs or extend the battery life, I could change my driving habits.

There is also the fun of taking someone for a ride that has never been in one. The reaction is usually always the same, and it’s one of two. “Holy shit, this thing is fast” with a smile, or the same statement said with absolute fear in their voice.

The stereo is spectacular for a stock system. I will say it is as good or better than the Burmester Audio system I had in my E-Class Mercedes. The bass hits hard and is a tighter bass. Highs are high and has a warm mid-range. There are a few metal songs I listen to that have “rap-like” bass. “One” by Metallica, and “Numb” by Lincoln Park. It’s almost too much. Overall it’s a pretty awesome sound system. It sure beats the shit out of the old AC Delco or Dolby Ausio systems of the 90’s.

Yes, there are things that could be better. One of the tail lights doesn’t have perfect fitment. The rear deck lid (the thing between the backseat and the glass that separates the trunk) has a warp to it. That could be caused by the immense heat we have as well.

The warranty on the car is great. I have never had an issue with them so far. I have taken it in for service (fan setup behind the rear view mirror to keep the cameras cool) and when you drop off your car, you get a loaner. The loaner comes with unlimited free supercharging. It’s actually a pretty good setup they have. The loaners aren’t the best cars, but they aren’t bad either.

The Model Y is nice enough, my concern is, yes I can get a very good deal right now, but, what happens when the $7500 tax rebate is gone.

Will EV sales dry up, Tesla drop prices, it's not really a big issue since it's a lease, and there won't be a buy out or trade unless it's for another Tesla, should they survive, which I think they will.

VTail has suggested the Cadillac Lyric, however it's significantly more $ than a Model Y, the Equinox looks interesting and I can get $1250 costco bucks buying it.

This is why I am looking at a sub $20k Model 3 that has at least 5 years left on the warranty. For a fun novelty vehicle that lowers the use of my Tundra and saves me a bit on gas.
If it is worth ZERO when the warranty is up I am not too worried about it. I will drive it till it’s completely dead.

I am not willing to dump a larger amount into the EV market at the moment. If I was willing to be in the 40s or 50s on an EV a Lucid would be 1st choice.

After the $7500 incentive goes away on September 30, Tesla will likely introduce a version during the last quarter that is less expensive. Will it be a regular Model Y with some features/design details omitted or a more compact version? We'll see but something will be released that will utilize existing production lines and fill in some gaps in demand. In China and Germany, they have an extended Model Y, 6 passenger, that has been spotted being tested as we speak. Its about 7 inches longer.

Drove my neighbors Tesla today. That pretty much settles it! I want one for sure.

We are about 2 weeks out from the end of the tax credits for the EVs.
Just went browsing again and there are tons of 3 year old Model 3 and Y long range AWD with less than 50k miles some even in the 30k mile range for right around $20k.
That is pretty much where they were a month ago when we were wondering where the prices would go once the incentive is gone.

Got the wife a new vehicle this week. Maybe in the next couple months we’ll add a Tesla to the stable.
Was initially just thinking the 3 but there are Ys for right about the same price.
May as well get something a touch bigger if the price is pretty much the same.

There shouldn't be any hesitation at the same price.

The 3 sits a little lower and is a bit sleeker, but the Y is many times more versatile for throwing things in back.

They drive about the same, but you sit higher in the Y...mostly because the seats on mounted on risers

IMHO get the Y, the 3 sits quite low, it is quick and has plenty of room once you are in, the Y is easier to get in and out and more storage room.

And it's just as quick...

Because I am a child, I didn’t get the Y, because hammering the performance version in a corner is a bad idea, relative to doing that in a 3p.

And, I was a 42 year old bachelor - as a married papa, I regret the decision.

So just going with the long range if I end up pulling the trigger.

Yeah, when I was looking at EVs, I stopped at the Tesla dealer and sat in both. The Y model was not too bad for me, getting in and out. No way I could live with the 3.

I will say this for the 3P - and probably some of the other models.

Other than my old Viper, it is probably the best car in active safety I’ve ever had - and the Viper was very weather dependent.

Any other car, and I would have been in a horrific accident in Miami. Only the combination of a low CG, AWD, and the horsepower allowed me to avoid it.

(I probably could have in the Viper, even without the AWD, due to it being about half the weight, but not many sedans/maybe any other could have come around that fast.

I was referring to the ability to brake, corner and accelerate.

Seems like my timing of things is off a bit. We replaced my wife’s vehicle in September so I did not pick up a Tesla with the tax credit.

Could have had a couple year old 3 for under 20k or a Y for right at 20k.

I was curious as to what would happen after the incentive went away.
I was hoping prices would drop after some slumping sales with the incentive ls gone.
They have pretty much held steady as with out the incentive.
So a Y for a couple years old and reasonable mileage is about 26k.
For my situation really wanted to be right at 20k.

Well now that gas prices are up nearly $2 a gallon the prices of the used Teslas are creeping up as well.
Seeing an extra 1.5-3k for the age range and model I am looking at.

Ohh well. I’ll get one someday. But here in all my research I am really liking the 2026 Y Juniper refresh. I like the looks better and the options.
So in a couple years when I can get a 2026 for under $30k I’ll likely pull the trigger.

Doesn’t help that when I changed my oil in the Tundra today I found that my front coilover is leaking.
So need to get my fronts rebuilt. Figure I’ll do upper control arms while I have it apart since my ball joints have seen better days.
So after the rebuild, upper control arms, and an alignment I’ll be about $800.

I will also be interested to see the specs on the Highlander EV and what this new Tesla is going to be. If they are actually going to make a true 3 row SUV.

Congrats, if I was in the market for a car I would consider one since most of my daily trips are under 20 miles.
