BytesAny Tesla Owners here? EDIT: Picked up Model 3 today!!
My golf buddy just got a Model Y for his wife. The new auto pilot system has definitely improved over this six year old Model S. Not sure if it's more cameras but it is light years ahead of his old system. (I still don't trust it but it is impressive)

Black92LXI guess I am weird but I have ZERO interest in the self driving stuff.

konata88I have minimal confidence in the FSD capability, especially for exception handling. Perhaps higher confidence for driving on highways and staying in the lane but only because my friend has been using it and has built up some confidence.
That being said, as I age, it may be handy for trips that are longer than 2 hours. Driving longer distances tends to get a little tiring so FSD beyond just cruise control may be useful.
I wish my truck or camry had FSD - it would be useful for trips to (example) Yellowstone. And I'd get to buy the car I want.
Still not sure it's worth the cost and privacy concerns.

I agree 100% but... If I had to be on the road with a drunk driving on his own or using the latest Tesla self driving feature I would take self driving EVERY TIME. That being said I would also prefer the drunk take an Uber. I would also use it myself in very low visibility situations. It is much improved and in 5 years I would bet that I will trust it.

pedropcolaI have never driven a Tesla. EV holds minimal interest to me. “Selfdriving” does interest me though. I commute to the Orlando airport on some shitty, constantly construction zone, hellacious drivers hellish environment of a commute. If it could handle that in a safe manner and then add torrential rainfall at times I would/could be persuaded to add one as a 3rd vehicle.

Self driving is NOT there yet but it is improving at exponential rates. If you are near a Tesla dealer and go do a test drive. Interesting to say the least. One problem I noticed the cameras were slow to pick up a yield sign when foliage covers it from a distance. When maps get more accurate I'm thinking this issue will go away. Or not

konata88Self driving side track:
1. There are driverless taxi's in san fran that seem to navigate the craziness with getting into much trouble. Not sure how issueless it has been but they are still in use (forgot the name).
2. How well does self driving respond to anomalies like if the road is banked in the wrong direction? There are local roads where the banking is in opposite angle you would think appropriate and so you need to slow a bit.

Bad weather and construction zones are not a EV self driving strong point.
I drive a Ford BlueCruise vehicle and the hands free disengages in that scenario.
Ford also has an eye nanny and it beeps and vibrates if you’re not looking at the road, then it will disengage.
I have not driven or even been in a Tesla.

crue-dellYou can subscribe to FSD for $100 a month.

Timdogg6I rented a 2024 model Y (I think that was it) and I own a 21 BMW x7. The Tesla self driving is light years ahead of the BMW.

myrottietyI'll tell you where the Auto Pilot it comes with really shines. (It's basically super smart cruise control that stays in its lane.)
Bumper to bumper city construction traffic. The whole pedal dance goes away. You can literally lean back and relax and let the car do it's thing. I've used it in a few funeral processions as well. Hyper convenient.
I've used the FSD thing a few times when it's been rolled out for free. It's neat... but I just don't really like it. I feel like i'm more on edge waiting for it to make a mistake than relaxing.

pedropcolaAre you guys saying you have to “rent” the feature for a hundred bucks a month?

HRKOne concern my wife brought up, privacy, how much data is Tesla obtaining, video, metrics, speed, stopping, voice recording. Where is is stored, how long, who do they share it with.
These (not just Tesla) are some serious issues to contemplate.
Tesla's TOS says they don't sell it.
Does Tesla sell my data to third parties?
We do not sell your personal information to anyone for any purpose, period. For more information our data sharing practices, refer to Tesla’s Privacy Notice.
Can Sentry Mode or Dashcam camera recordings be requested from Tesla?
No. To protect your privacy, some data and recordings, including Sentry Mode and Dashcam recordings, are not eligible to be provided, as it is either not sent to Tesla or not associated with your Tesla Account. Learn more on how to obtain your Sentry Mode and Dashcam recordings.

konata88HRK - thanks. Good to know. Perhaps Tesla is not invading privacy as much as they could be. My friend wasn't sure as he doesn't really care. But it's very much a concern and consideration for me.

crue-dellYou can purchase it outright, or subscribe monthly for the service. FSD has dramatically improved, at a very fast rate. The older hardware will probably not be able to support the new versions. Tesla has no real competitors when it comes to self driving .The robotaxi service that just started is using a version that is 6 months ahead of the current version offered in the personal vehicles. This was the version that delivered a new model Y, from the factory directly to a consumer, about a month ago. The future will be wild and it will happen fast. Tesla as a company has really went all in on autonomous driving, the car will be/is just a robot that employs their AI and just a small portion of their overall business.

crue-dellI will caution you,if you do any research into Tesla, you will be overwhelmed by negative, fabricated or totally out of context information. I can't think of another company that is attacked on the same level as Tesla is. Of course Elon Musk is a polarizing figure but Tesla has over 120,000 employees and the best engineers on the planet. I remember seeing a figure that Tesla gets like 3 million job applications a year. There is signal and noise, if you block out the noise and pay attention to the signal, it's really mind blowing what they have done in a relatively short time.

sjtillCrue-dell--that is a really useful post. The Left has gone from "Elon is a Demi-God" to "Elon is a Demon" with no pause in between. Fortunately the vandalism crap seems to have let up after people got caught on the Tesla's camera doing it.
I saw a bumper sticker on a Model 3, said something like "I drive it now in shame". What idiots. Hery Ford was a racist and anti-semite; he imported Arabs from Iraq to work in his factories. People still bought his cars.

Very clear on this. Just read the EV threads on this forum alone and the complete hate for EVs is wild.
Pretty much only taking note of what actual owners say.
Neighbor has a Y and loves it. Talked a long while about Teslas this evening.

I'm a fan of EV, but Teasla doesn't happen to be my choice...I'm really a fan of how Lucid designed it's packaging to compliment the EV drivetrain
Having said that, one has to admire how far Teasla has pushed the envelope of acceptance for EVs. Without the network of Tesla charging stations, owning an EV really wouldn't even come up on most folk's radar
