This has gone too far.

I gave blood yesterday, I've been doing so for quite awhile.

As part of the check in process, they ask the usual health questions. Every time. If you donate blood then you probably know the routine.

The lady worker looked at me, sighed and sort of grimaced and said she hated to ask me the next question, but she had to.

"Sir, are you a man or a woman?"

What? Why are you asking me this? Is this a joke?

She explained that it's a brand new question, and an answer of male or female must be replied. Every donor must be asked this question, every time. Can't refer to the patients computer file info to figure this out. Must be verbally asked and answered every time. I guess just in case the fruitcakes change their minds from time to time on whatever their orientation maybe today. Or this week. Whatever. We surely don't want to offend them.

I fussed. She wouldn't budge.

Bottom line, per the legal department responding to some questions and pressure and legal threat implications of some LBTQ-whatever activists or weird fussy group, and them agreeing, this question must be asked. Every.Single.Time. Just has be asked and answered. She mentioned something about transsexuals or transgenders or trans-confused blah blah blah.

Whatever. Since I realize she's just a regular worker, doesn't make policies or management decisions, needs her paycheck, there's no need to be mean to her.

I quickly decided against offering to drop my pants and visually show her, didn't want the cops to arrest me.

She was a actually very cool to deal with, she said she thought it was a silly new policy and didn't like it either.

I relented and told her I am male. Was male at birth, male yesterday and today, and would be tomorrow. She laughed, we got along great, I really liked her, she was great at doing her job technically as well as an awesome friendly and courteous person. She and other workers are just put in an uncomfortable situation and just have to deal with it.

The times, they are changing, they surely are.

We’ve been checking the right boxes all our lives. What’s the big deal?

I do recall that one of my best friends growing up, through school, little league etc. received an NROTC scholarship. When he was going through the enrollment process with the Navy, someone noticed his birth certificate said “female.” That caused some confusion, some embarrassment, somehow it was corrected and life went on. How it had gone undetected ~18 years, who knows?

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

According to these lunatics, that isn’t dispositive anymore.

Interesting. I suspect that is question one may not ask of a candidate during a job interview.

Excuse me for asking, I do not belong YET to a PC minded society and honestly I don't give a flying duck about it generally speaking and much less in particular, but I thought being a man or a woman would be consider discriminatory in this extremely liberal way of thinking and there also should be a lot of intermediate and alternate options between Male and Female (which to my uneducated mind is still quite different to Man or Woman).

So if anywont can spare / waste the time to clarify I'd be delighted.

Let's say someone only wants "male" blood, or only wants "female" blood, and as the "recipient", they should have a greater precedence of the "sex" of the donor, more so than the donor's preference, no?

Honesty is prudent in the it is better to "give" than to "deceive", department.

Hypotheticallymonkeyspeaking.

This may be a stupid question but why do they need to know. Isn't a given blood type the same with male and female or do they keep it seperate?

It gives you a chance to declare whether you're a man or a woman. If you get to declare whether you're a man or a woman, then you get to choose whether you're a man or a woman (or some combination of the two, or neither, or just kinda variable depending on how your Saturday night is going). If you get to choose whether you're a man or a woman then you're EMPOWERED! (isn't that wonderful?), and EMPOWERING YOU! is their little way of being positive and nurturing and maybe, we hope, not having to put up with any crap from you because they're already gone through a formalistic ritual of acknowledging your importance and relevance to the world around you.

IOW, it's either the politics of symbolism or something close to it.

Yes, there are even more confusing times ahead.

I would treat this like when I go to Walmart and buy 9mm ammo, and they ask if it is for a pistol or rifle. I always answer "submachine gun".

Not a stupid question at all.
The answer however is just more stupid $h!t that some fruitcake dreamed up.

Never have seen gender on a bag of blood yet. Type - yes. Gender, (and there are only 2), Oh hell no.

So, now that they ask, does that make it gender fluid?
