It was the best marketing plan in the history of marketing. Coke intentionally made new Coke taste just like Pepsi and people were up in arms about Coke now being terrible because it tastes like Pepsi.

This happened just as Pepsi was on a huge rise to overtake Coke. Coke got an estimated 1 billion dollars in free advertisement and switched back to the original recipe leaving Pepsi in the dust forever.

took one long swig, did't like the taste, and 3-4 minutes later I'm headed to the hospital as large quarter sized welts began appearing all over my body.

I had some kind of severe allergic reaction. Never touched it again. Was very happy when coke classic hit the market

That's funny, I may buy a 6-pack for nostalgia as well. I was just in elementary school, but I remember when it came out and not liking it at all. I always liked Coke over Pepsi so Coke "Classic" all the way.

That said, I've been just drinking diet for 20+ years, never liked Diet Coke but Coke Zero is where it's at!

It is a TV series on Netflix that is set in the 1980's.

As someone who grew up in the 1980's, I think that did a really good job of authentically capturing the time period.

Is it really "New Coke" now. I mean it's been tried before and was "New Coke" than.

Now it's kinda like "Failed Coke" or "New Coke Reloaded" or "New Coke 2.0" Big Grin

Child of the eighties. They couldn't do a better job capturing my childhood if they tried. I'd watch the show for the nostalgia alone. Besides that the show is freaking awesome on it's own merits, the fact that it reminds me of my childhood and I'm hook, line, and sinker.

I can't decide if I will watch one by one, or wait for the binge in a year.

Ahh yes, Crystal Pepsi. My Grandmother loved this stuff. Her place was chock full of it and Fresca I remember drinking a lot of it when I was a kid at her house.
They did a rerelease of it maybe a year or two ago so I bought a bottle for the memory of it.
Was it ever terrible!

Wait a minute. Back in the 80's, after they realized they screwed up, they said they were bringing back the "original Coke" and I thought they did. If that was true, then what the hell is this "New Coke" business?

I'm so confused. Confused

Pass.

I rarely drink soft-drinks, if it's a Coke, I'll go for the Mexican bottled variety. Tastes like Coke before the whole New Coke/Classic Coke debacle.

Pepsi is the most superior soda. Coca Cola is far inferior to Pepsi.
New Coke sucked back then. It was inferior to Pepsi and Classic Coke.

Now I drink Waterloo flavored water because soda is nit healthy.

I suck. lol

You and me both. When Classic Coke was introduced I swore it was sweeter and hated it. Turns out the HFCS made it that way. I pretty much quit Coke until I found Mexican Coke, now my drink of choice.

Mexican Coke has real sugar or at least it used to anyway. Pretty easy to find around here but it costs more than the US version.

Buy coke at Passover. Same price and can't have HFCS in it. Look for bottles with yellow tops or a circle with a P inside of it.

I don't think it was a marketing plan at all. I really do think that Coca-Cola was panicking about Pepsi overtaking them and so they figured they would make their own Pepsi.

You have to remember that 1985 was the height of the Cola Wars and it looked like Pepsi was going to overtake Coke at one point.

I was in the grocery business at the time and I relayed the dissatisfaction to a Coke employee who was there one night and he payed the whole thing out for me just the way it happened. Could have been his opinion I suppose but no one was thinking like that back then. Everyone thought Coke screwed up.

I generally liked Pepsi better than Coke until the Mexican Coke showed up. The vending machines at my office have Coke Zero in them and that's actually not bad, at least the cherry variety. I get funny looks from people who don't know about it when I say I need to go to Costco to pick up some Mexican Coke. Big Grin

New Coke was originally on the market for only 79 days. Realizing their blunder, Coca-cola took it off the market after 79 days and reinstituted the original formula as "Coke Classic".

Now New Coke is being reintroduced in ltd supplies in connection with a cable program set in 1985, when the initial debacle happened. New Coke will be prominent in several shots.
