If it was a protest: really weird that it happened with no one around to see it. If he wanted to make a statement and had enough forethought to plant the money, why not have some witnesses too? What effect is there to a protest that no one sees?

Took himself to our daughter's house, with some medical supplies, and wanted her to stitch up the entry and exit holes. And he did it with his duty gun, not some toy like a .22.

And yeah, I know that a .22 is not a toy. It has killed a lot of game animals up to and including moose. Had an uncle, long since deceased, that regularly used a .22 single shot rifle to take deer, even an occasional elk.

Some of the butchers in Germany who killed their own animals used a .22 cal device to put down cows, pigs, etc.

Sure, someone else could have planted the note and money. Anything's possible, just based on the very sketchy details in the article.

I don't disagree that it was a terrible protest. But that doesn't mean this wasn't the crazy man's attempt at a protest. He's crazy, so it could have made perfect sense to him.

Yes, it's also possible that the protest reasoning very likely could have just been tacked on to the end by the crazy man. But I still think the most reasonable explanation is that the money and note were left by the crazy man, and the self-inflicted gunshot was most likely pre-planned, for whatever crazy reason.

How's this for a plausible theory? Maybe he was going to off himself. He left the note and tip as an apology for the pending cleanup, but then either had a ND in the process or flinched and missed, with the pain from the wound shocking him into deciding he wanted to live. (That's not unheard of...) He then went with this "protest" story as the first thing that came to his pain-addled crazy mind, because he didn't want to admit that he was trying to commit suicide.
