P250UA5When I was a kid, area code [409 for us] wasn't required in our town, and all numbers had a 385 prefix. So, all you needed was the last 4.
I was in HS when 386 got added & you have to give the full number.

The house phone number is still the same however the area code has changed a few time as the area has grown.

I have some padlocks that use those for the combination.
Black dial phone on the kitchen counter.
One ring for us, two for a neighbor.
To make a long distance call, you dial zero for the operator and they handled the rest.
No area codes.

As 71 TRUCK stated, it went from a 7-digit to a 10-digit number years ago; they just added the area code.
It started as a kid as BR8-****
Then it changed to 214-278-****.
