The state of Maine’s first Somali Muslim immigrant police officer has been placed on administrative leave after being arrested for a multitude of charges, including assault, at a Ja Rule concert.

Zahra Munye Abu, a 24-year-old who arrived in the U.S. with her parents from Kenya, was heralded by the Portland, Maine media this month for becoming the first Somali immigrant to join Portland’s Police Department. But, on Tuesday, the Portland Press Herald confirmed that Abu had been arrested in Worcester, Massachusetts at a concert.

According to the Worcester Police Department, Abu was arrested at the Ja Rule and Ashanti concert at the Palladium Nightclub and charged with assault, battery, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, and trespassing.

Now, Abu has been placed on administrative leave with pay as the incident is investigated. Should Abu be convicted of the misdemeanor charges, she will face a maximum sentence of two and a half years in Worcester County Jail.

Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck previously said Abu was one of “the best” officers at the Portland Police Department, championing diversity.

Sauschuck said previously, “There’s no question that we want to be as diverse as our communities, but we will only hire the best, and I do believe she is one of them. I hire good human beings and then we make police officers from them.”

Fatuma Hussein, the executive director of the United Somali Women of Maine, previously called Abu a “role model.”

she was sworn in on 5 Jan 2018

I think it is time to review their standards defining excellence.

Therein lies the problem. The standards are being rewritten and often bear little semblance to what preceded the revisions. When you see someone qualify "the best" with 'championing diversity', you know "the best" probably doesn't mean the same thing to them as it does to you.

In official capacity as a police officer (Trespassing would indicate that she was not), or visiting off-duty? OK, what is a Muslim doing at a night club, with free-flowing alcohol and other "debauchery" going on? (Rhetorical.)

Did I understand properly, that all those charges are misdemeanors? I would think that at least some of them are felonies!!!!

Or is the charging being done to cover the issues?

It all depends on the specific details of the incident. According to the article, she's being charged with:

quote:
assault, battery, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, and trespassing

Offenses like assault or battery can typically be either a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the severity and other factors.

For example, a battery that only results in red marks and minor pain would usually be a misdemeanor, meanwhile a battery that results in more serious injuries, or one in which a weapon was used, would usually be a felony.

Sounds like she was involved in a fight at the concert, but there weren't any serious injuries or other aggravating factors, so she's being charged with the misdemeanor version of those offenses.

sounds like she was acting like an ass at the concert

https://www.washingtonpost.com...m_term=.03f9ea61e100

Authorities in Massachusetts say a Maine police officer accused officers of racial profiling as they arrested her for pushing through a concert crowd and refusing to leave after being asked dozens of time.

Worcester police arrested 24-year-old Portland officer Zahra Munye Abu on Saturday night at a Ja Rule and Ashanti concert.

The Worcester Telegram and Gazette reports that police say Abu was escorted out after she grabbed the head of security by the front of his shirt. She was charged with misdemeanors, including assault and battery, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

This was in American Thinker on the 17th, yesterday and is, I believe, germane to this.

It isn't going to be a shocker that people who grow up in a culture foreign to ours may have ways of thinking and acting that are foreign to us, to don't fit with us, are antithetical to what we believe is right behavior.

Busting your hump to put those people in positions of authority seems to me to be a serious mistake unless you really want the kind of confrontation shown with the Somali cop.
