do you make more working nights?

what is your overtime 'differential' ? weekends?

does it matter one unit vs another? ie ED vs. OR vs a floor unit

family member is embarking on this career and I'm curious what she can expect. one offer looks like they run 12hr shifts

thanks --

Not a nurse……. Girlfriend in a NP (spent 20yrs trauma and ER as RN)

Pay is very geographic and related to the number of nursing schools that are in the area.

Make friends with the old nurses, learn as much practical stuff as possible. They can be brutal towards fresh graduates with an attitude

Want to make serious cash. Be a travel nurse. Many are making upwards towards $200/hr + per deum on a 3mth contract currently. while a shift nurse is $25-40 in most areas depending on experience

most of the big hospital networks have implemented 'nurse residency' programs of various lengths for new grad nurses

basically a bridge-type program to get new nurses accustomed to the nurse roles in their particular institution. training, mentoring, job-shadowing etc. anywhere from 6 months to a year plus.

it would seem the years of a new nurse getting 'thrown to the wolves' is over. at least in the big facilities which is a big plus.

yeah the traveling thing is a big $$$ opportunity but comes with its own set of pitfalls.

Mrs.BurtonRW has been a nurse since 2006.

1) They eat their young.
2) They eat their own.
3) Nurse management is the embodiment of the Peter Principal.
4) The pay is NOT as good as it looks u less you’re pulling nights, weekends, and generally shit shifts. Or constantly working agency contracts.
5) Working with other nurses is like being the “smart one” in a group project in middle school.

It’s… not good. But rewarding if that’s what you want to get out of it.

Just watch General Hospital. It explains it all in a melodramatic format

My daughter in law is working PICU at a local Children's Hospital . 13 week contracts . Night shift pays about $150 / hr . When the gravy train runs out she'll probably go " on staff " . They have raised the pay enough to make her want to stay on .
She worked NICU at a different Hospital some time back so this is nothing new for her .

Different hospitals, pay different hourly rates. Mostly based on experience, specialty area and the need of the hospital. If they need your skill set and they are really SHORT on that area, then they will offer you more.

Most places will pay Night Differential and Weekend Differential. 12 Hr shift is common. Some places still have 8 Hr shift.

MrsBurtonRW said it correctly above. But don't let that discourage your family member. Nursing a good career if your heart is into the job. If your family member is a New Grad, I suggest at least a year in Med Surge unit to learn the basics.

I still like to come to work every single day to serve our veterans. Sometimes, it is the management people that I don't like to deal with. Bunch of (I dont want to say it).
