I wonder who said that?

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Yes, and the new one must have term limits built into it, along with mandatory life sentences for lobbyists and any politician who accepts money from them.

And trash about 90K pages of the IRS code, go to either a fair tax or flat tax. And if you are not a legal CITIZEN of this nation you cannot hold federal elected office.

Mandatory headcount limits on all gubbermint agencies, and every gubbermint employee is on a performance plan, reviewed quarterly, and administered annually. Performance scale of 1-4. 1 is outstanding, 4 is under performing and on official notice to improve or be fired.

Pay raises, if any, are dependent on actual performance, on the job.

I can hear all the pissing and moaning now, it won't work, it is too harsh, yada yada.

Well, friends and neighbors, it worked for a lot of years in the IBM corporation.

the reason they don't care as none of them have ever been held accountable for their actions and the results

if we as a country started to do that, we'd have a lot less of this crap

How do WE as a country hold politicians accountable for their actions and the results?

We have no mechanism for that.

The 'benefits' are immediate but most of the bad effects (mostly debt) are long term and all they care about is the next election. They only have to kick the can down the road until they are out of the game.

Well, we do have a republic, not a democracy. The theory there is the ballot-box and impeachment are the means to hold them accountable.

And the Founders set up some inertia to guard against pure populism - the Senate, life appointments for judges. In general, it's a good thing that the 'vox populi' is tempered.

It does get frustrating when the inertia lags things coming our direction. But it was a good thing the last 6 years when it kept some of Obama's nonsense in check.

The Progs are trashing Trump partly to help their Senate chances in 2018.

If we can get enough of a majority to allow reasonable items of all types to get through the Senate, I think opposition to the message will disappear.

If we keep voting in the least-Progressive candidates, things will right themselves fairly readily. Frustrating to see how long that takes, but the alternative (sudden, and possibly permanent, policy swings based on the initial attainment of a slight majority) would be far more risky.

TL: DR. The same frustration affected the other side in 2008, and the same inertia kept the country together. 2018 will tell the tale.

Unfortunately, the system we have now was not that set up by the Founders. For example, the Founders set it up so that the state legislatures chose 2 senators from each state. Thus, giving the state legislatures control over who went to the senate.

That was changed when senators were chosen by popular vote, like the representatives.

In effect, just set up a second house of representatives, with longer terms. Inevitable that it took power from the states and gave it to the parties. So, the senator who could provide the most free shit to the voters in the state got sent back for another tour at the trough.

The point is that there is no way to hold them accountable. Sure, they can be voted out of office, but that doesn't hold them accountable, it just re-shuffles the deck chairs on the Titanic. Meanwhile the band plays on until
the next election. They only have to kick the can down the road until they get theirs and can get out of the game.

As a country, we continue to head for moral and economic collapse, and when the SHTF, they will go to their multi-million $ bunkers which they are building as we argue about how to hold them accountable.

The reason the Roman empire is so fascinating for so many is because human nature hasn't changed. Many of the same traits made America great for a time and the same 'bread and circuses' softening and corruption of the people is bringing us to the same fate. We just don't know how long it will take.
