As someone who works with automotive designers on a regular basis, artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity. I get to point out mistakes they make, but I get that it's hard to take into account everything down the road & do it as cheap as possible.
It's a cool mfg concept, but that video ignores a lot of logistics & choke points that make it completely unworkable for large-scale operations. The assembly cell might only cost 3M & build 1/day, but how many 3D printers are feeding it & how long do they take?
Prototypes are one area where it could very well work, especially coupled with AI/iterative design.

yep and in custom shops, where creating a part with a 3d printer would take less time than banging it out on a leather pad and using an english wheel.

Or recreating a part that can't be found due to lack of replacements in the market.
