Seems like the coach should be subject to some scrutiny as well.

Why would you sue the assailant? He’s a kid who doesn’t own anything.
The school district on the other hand has insurance or is self insured. They are the deep pockets in something like this. Criminal charges would be nice but we’re talking about a black kid “playing a sport”.
Chances are, the “authorities” won’t do anything that results in anything more serious than picking up some trash on the weekends or serving homeless folks soup for lunch…also on weekends because Tyronius needs to attend skool.

I saw a post on FB claiming that criticism of the player who caused the injury is racist.

Sue, sue, sue - what does that accomplish?

The injured player's teammates need to teach the thug about accountability and consequences so that his football career is reduced to controlling a wheelchair from a joystick for the rest of his life!

If I were the player's father, I'd want to give him a teaching moment. (That could take many forms, so don't let your imagination run wild.)

This would have had non-stop outrage and TV coverage if it had been a white kid jumping on a black player. BLM, Al Sharpton, Ben Crump ...

When suing a minor, you are suing them through their parents/guardians. I double checked and that is true in Michigan. The real question is whether or not the parents/guardians have assets sufficient to compensate for legal fees and pain/suffering for the victim?

I turned to Wikipedia, and my conclusion is it's a low probability that the parents/guardians are worth suing since the school appears to be in the impoverished part of the county. The demographic stats that stuck out to me:
  • High school - 64.6% of the students were eligible for free or reduced lunch, and like the aggressor 49.1% of students are black
  • County - 12.30% of those under age 18 are living below poverty line, and 11.1% black

    A) No telling what the coaches told him/have told him in general.

    B) Frankly, football is too violent for pubescent bodies - their muscles can easily overpower their skeletal system and soft tissues.

A kid twice your size jumping up in the air and landing on you [intentionally!] can overpower bones and tissue, too!

The issue here, I think, isn’t really about young kids and football. It’s about one kid’s intentional bad behavior (read: attack), and the resultant damage.

And if the coaches don’t/haven’t now told him, “sit your butt down, you’re off the team from now on” then they need a dose of reality too.

    But that’s just my opinion.

Yup, I apparently found incorrect pictures. My bad.
Doesn't change that this incident should have resulted in criminal charges and a lifetime ban from any contact sports.

I want the attacker to spend every day of the rest of his life in slightly worse pain than his victim.

    Every day.

When the local news first released this story they tried to spin it by describing the victim as "being blocked" or "being tackled", not lying on the field after the play had passed.

This is the same station that will refuse to use the term gangs when junior miscreants are involved, they are always groups, teens or youths. It was particularly disgusting a month or two ago when some of them shot up an IHOP and the news coverage referred to them as "kids".

This is where my mind went, his team should have taken him out right there. There will be no justice in this now.

Assault, all day long and twice on Sunday. Depending on the age of the aggressor and the laws in that area, probably a referral to juvenile court or something of the like. In other words, no consequences.

Beating his ass won't pay the lifelong medical problems. The school, coach, the thug's parents all bear responsibility.
