Today is the anniversary of my maternal grandfather, D/9947 Pte William Victor Collins 6th Dragoon Guards. He and his pal, Pte McDonald were killed 104 years ago tonight during a barrage from the opposition near Gillemont Farm on the Somme. They lie buried side-by-side in the Northern extension military Cemetery at Templeux-le-Guérard, Row B, plots 1 and 2. Back in 1998, it was a very poignant moment for me to stand by his grave, the first family member ever to do so. I left him a couple of momentos, a set of my stars and crowns, and one of my silver rose and laurel collar dogs.

I’m sorry you never had a chance to know him, Tac. It's nice that you remember and honor him.

Thank you for sharing this with us Tac.

I will remember your grandfather and his mate tonight as I raise a glass.

They were great men defending their country. I’m sure you are very proud of his service.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow... An entire generation of Brits was lost on the Somme. I will be visiting (walk there for exercise) the cemetery today and make it a point to visit the WWI vets there in honor of your grandfather,

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
