I was in Fleet Farm today, looked in the ammo section.

They had some 40 S&W, a fair amount of 380, a few others. There was no 9mm on the shelf, very little if any 223 or AK ammo. Some may of been FMJ, at least something.

One just has to use their ‘deer rifle’ or shotgun, then you’ll be set.

All of my ammo will be for self defense if the situation required me to defend my family

Slow down here for a minute. I never even considered the 45-70 as coming in self defense. It sure would be good for that. The 300 grain loads probably could be considered that way. I'd sure hate to be hit by one. And I'd think the 405s would shoot through anything short of a buffalo or elephant. Somewhere I've got a bunch (a cigar box full) of 500 grain cast bullets. I have no idea if they're hard cast or not. In the distant past, the caster greased them up with some awful smelly old dark colored grease.

Guess this has become a nasty thread. Now I've gotta go to the dungeon and take some inventory counts.

I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of any type ammo.
Range ammo hurts too.

Hollow point? Probably no more than 500 rounds total in 9mm, .357, .40, .44 and .45. But as any bullet is a SD bullet in a pinch, I've got enough for anything short of a full-on insurrection.

Even the deer rifles and milsurps are well stocked.

If I quoted my ammo amount, it would be a total of training and self-defense.

I keep a spreadsheet with the count, but if I had to take a guess without looking at it, I would think I am 50% self defense and 50% training.

The research I've done on plate carriers indicate that Thirty aught six is the BAMF in defeating most plates. I'd call my stash of ammo I use for shooting CMP matches would be considered damn good for self defense.

I probably never have more than 100 rounds of quality self defense ammo in the calibers we shoot regularly including 5.56. But I doubt anyone wants to be down range of the considerable quantity of any ammo I have.

I see 30.06 as an issue in AP form for many plates, but in normal form its not a challenge for most. FWIW.

Right. "Black tip" .30-06 AP is one of the testing loads for NIJ certification of Level IV hard plates. But while it's powerful, it's not the most powerful AP load by any means. It's just commonly available, so not only is it more likely to be encountered as a threat than some of the more boutique AP loads, it is also readily available for the testing. (Millions of rounds of surplus .30-06 AP are out there in civilian hands.)

Hey? Since we are at 'war' with this virus thing.... aren't we limited to full metal jacket?

Today, looking at the post title I realized I had spelled defense-defence. Brain fart.
