It is my Son. He is from the Cincy area, but spent the last year in Nashville, finishing his education, four years prior he was in Tuscaloosa at the University of Alabama.

Technically, his permanent residence was Cincy, fro the time he was born.

I'm more than happy to chat with him if he has any questions. I'm born and raised in NC.

FYI, Steve, prepare him for increased cost of living.

Years ago I made the same move from Cincy (well, to Greensboro, but whatever). Groceries in particular are more expensive, as is housing. Not saying NC is super expensive, but compared to Cincy, it's a noticeable increase. Same with the typical bars, restaurants, etc. I'd imagine GSO is cheaper than Charlotte.

Others have covered the gun stuff just fine, but tell him to watch out for the DMV. Every experience I ever had with the OH BMV, including downtown Cincy branches, was smooth and simple. I never had a SINGLE easy experience with NC DMV. There are also use taxes for his car...that they won't tell you how much the rate is. Surprise! When/if he leaves NC, he'll aggressively be pursued by the DMV to return his plates (never encountered a state that does that...) at his own expense.

There's probably also a local sales tax as well. When I moved, I asked like a dozen cashiers what the Guilford county rate was and none could tell me. Roll Eyes

One thing to look out for: there may be a number of other Buckeye expats there. I found dozens of other OH folks in Greensboro when I moved there. Including the guy right next to me. Maybe demographics has changed (this was back when people were fleeing the great recession), but there were a ton of OH plates around.

One can live in an adjacent county, all being rural to very rural, and live much cheaper. To include South Carolina.

Commute can be managed, but like any other city (we’re #15 in the nation I believe) rush hour sucks. But outside of commute time, traffic isn’t as awful as other cities.

What type of work will he be doing? Tied to the city-proper?

I’ve worked in several areas of the city and have lived in both north and south Charlotte, and grew up 60 miles north. And with my job I have some other insights. I’ll email you so you’ve got my contact info to pass on to him.

Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here.

Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard.

Assuming you are referring to Red Bridges BBQ in Shelby on US 74, yes still open, even during the corona. There is also Alston Bridges Barbecue in Shelby, and they were open the last time I was there in late 2019. Neither one has pizza, though. Frown

As stated Charlotte has lots of different areas. For example I used to live in the city in a high rise with your typical city life style and moved about 11 miles north and now live half an acre and lots of my neighbors have horses and such. As for guns yes it can take 3+ months to get your pistol permit/ conceal carry permit, both of which are needed for pistol purchases. The guns he already owns are fine and he can open carry. If your son wants to hit up a range or get a beer I would be happy to take him out. My email is in the my profile.

Thank you to all who have responded, with the wealth of information and offers of assistance.

He is living downtown, walking distance to his office. We believe he will be there for a minimum of 2 years, in the world of investment banking.

He will be working 80+ hours per week initially. Very similar to the hours he worked as an Intern.

He is trying to get everything (drivers license, plates, insurance, etc...) wrapped up in the next couple of weeks.

We did have some excellent BBQ at Bar-B-Q King. The place is not much to look at when you drive up/in, but it was very, very good, IMO.

Unbelievably proud of all he has accomplished and the young man he has become. My wife and I are truly blessed.

Believe your intent was to state ‘either”.
You either need the permit to purchase which I believe is $10 or have your concealed carry permit.
With a concealed carry permit you do not need the permit to purchase.
Thus, if you move to North Carolina get a concealed permit whether or not you intend to carry.

I'll extend the same offer. I've been here 20 years+. As Oat referenced, buying prepared food in the City is taxed at a higher rate. Sales tax is a County by County item, and goes from a low of 7.5% to Charlotte at 9.25% in center city.

Just west and outside of Charlotte on US 74, yes, quite an eyesore, I haven't tried it yet.

Tell your son to check out Midwood Smokehouse. There are several locations.

On the other side of the street, just coming off the interstates as you leave Charlotte, is Blackstone Shooting Sports. It's a very nice place full of eye candy all in the middle of the floor, and they are eager to have you handle the merchandise, but pricey.

Dunno if this has been mentioned, but each county has its own tax rate, find a cheap one and live there...we used to have friends that lived in lincolnton and it was cheaper to live there vs Charlotte.

Read "One Second After", set in that area. Good work of fiction Wink
