We’re looking at going to Dallas in 2 weeks. My daughter’s college dance team will be there as the football team will be playing in a bowl game. We won’t have a ton of time, but would like to see a few things on that Friday. Dealey Plaza? What BBQ? The game is in Corsicana and we’ll be staying closer to that area, depending on what I can find (usually look for Holiday Inn Express or Fairfield…I’ve got more Holiday Inn points so probably one of their locations).

Visit and tour the US Bureau of Engraving & Printing located in Fort Worth. It’s just off of I-35W not too far from the Texas Motor Speedway.

They print our paper currency. It’s a great tour, free of charge. You’ll be in close proximity to huge amounts of American dollars.

Fort Worth has the #1 BBQ joint in all of Texas according to Texas Monthly's last rating. It is called Goldee's (4645 Dick Price Rd, Fort Worth, TX 76140).

Near downtown Dallas there is Haas Moto Museum which is an awesome motorcycle collection.

Corsicana has the world famous collins street bakery which is known for their fruitcakes. I prefer their donuts. Go to the original near downtown Corsicana not the ones out on the highway.

A few million have moved here. So whatever you plan, I sure wouldn’t plan for far drives. Traffic is like Los Angeles now.

Since tomorrow is the 61st anniversary, this is a can't miss for anyone with an interest. One of those moments that you never forget what you were doing.
I was lined up for the school bus to go home that day, in 5th grade when the Principal came on the loudspeaker to make an announcement..

The Sixth Floor Museum.

I also spent more time there than we planned. My wife accuses me of reading every caption.

The George W Bush Library at SMU was better than expected.

For great BBQ you can try The Slow Bone, or Lockhart Smokehouse. These 2 you can't go wrong and they are both closer to downtown area and places you will probably want to see.

Also wanted to add this museum to see. The The Ann & Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum is one of the finest and largest Samurai armor collections outside of Japan. This is an amazing collection and would highly recommend a visit. Please note the days/hours they are open to make sure you can visit.

Also on the 1st floor of the same building is a very good restaurant. Saint Ann Restaurant has great food and good drinks.

Corsicana isn't all that close to Dallas.

But the Perot museum (natural history) is good.

There is good stuff in Ft Worth, too. The Amon Carter art museum.

Lockhart Smokehouse is located in the Bishop Arts District. A cool spot to explore. Eno's Pizza is right down the street from there and is another great option. Also located there is Dude, Sweet Chocolate. In case anyone in your family has a sweet tooth.

The Bush Library, 6th Floor Museum, and Holocaust Museum are all cool spots to visit.

Others have mentioned traffic. Yup, it's here, and its a mix on uneducated non-drivers and blatantly selfish pricks in their Tesla's or BMW's Smile . Be wary of the Nissan Altima's with their fake paper tags and give them lots of space as there is a 98% chance they don't have insurance.

Speed traps - you mentioned being in the Corsicana area. Between Dallas and Corsicana - Wilmer, Ferris, Palmer, and Rice PD all patrol IH-45 heavily. In the Dallas metro area, none of our agencies really patrol the highways because we are too busy with actual crime.

The upside? The summer heat and humidity is finally over and it has been really pleasant to be outside.

To add to this:
  • Corsicana is 55 miles from downtown Dallas
  • Corsicana is 81 miles from Fort Worth Stockyards
  • Ennis is where the highways split for going to Dallas (I-45) or Ft Worth (US 287). Ennis puts you 21 miles closer to DFW and it's an easy drive from Ennis to Corsicana.
  • Ennis has both a Holiday Inn Express and La Quinta.

I lived in Dallas for 35 years and despite loving history could never make myself go to the museum. I worked at a hotel 2 blocks away and gave tourists directions there every day.

Dad worked downtown and watched JFK drive down Main Street 3 minutes before it happened. My Dad also attended much of Jack Ruby's trial in person. I guess I had heard so much about it, I didn't need to go to the museum. Dallas had to eat a bad reputation for many years for "killing the president" we didn't need or want to be reminded about it. The Dallas Cowboys becoming "America's Team" in the 1970s really did help restore the city's reputation.

Pecan Lodge in downtown Dallas is the best barbecue in Dallas that I have had, but it's been about 5 years since I was there. Fort Worth has Goldee's and Panther City that have made the Texas Monthly top 10. If you like American western art, Fort Worth has the better museums.

    I have a few SIGs.

Catch a Cowboys game, they will pay you to fill the seat! ( The same goes for The NY Giants/Jets, but they will also give you a free beer.

  • I was looking at Ennis, but if I stay in Hillsboro, it’s about 1/2 the cost. The drive to Corsicana is about 40ish miles vs 20, but that doesn’t bother me too much. We’re trying to keep costs down as much as we can.
