McConnell Steps down as Senate GOP Leader

Steve Beshear (D) was re-elected as Governor in November 2023, with his term ending in December 2027. Beshear will probably run for the U.S. Senate in 2026. Who the Republican candidate could be is unknown.

The last Republican candidate (Daniel Cameron, a McConnell protege) for Governor lost by over 5%. The Senator Rand Paul faction is in ascendancy in KY, while the McConnell “old guard” is in decline.

There’s a move in the current legislative session for Constitutional Amendment to have Gov/LtGov, SecState, etc for even-year elections effective beginning in 2032, which makes the next term of office from 2027 to 2032 (a one-off single 5-year term).

Not sure where you got this but Steve Beshear has not been governor since 2015.

Dandy Andy that should read.

Ummm…he’s not retiring from the senate; only stepping down from his leadership role.

”One of life's most under appreciated talents is to know when it's time to move on to life's next chapter,” McConnell continued. “So I stand before you today, to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate.” He said he is 'not going anywhere anytime soon' and will remain a U.S. senator, despite stepping down from leadership. He is up for re-election in two years in 2026.

I’m not going anywhere

Such is McConnell’s addiction to power. Sadly, He is, of course, not alone in that addiction.

I’m sure you didn’t just mean McConnell. They are all addicted to it which is why they all stick around way too long.

Yeah, I oops'ed I my post earlier, I meant to ask why wait to step down from leadership.

I suspect he still wants to exert some control over what the senate looks like should Trump be elected.

“It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage than a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old institution and merely lukewarm defenders in those who gain by the new ones. ”

― Niccolò Machiavelli

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

“Work” and congress are rarely used in the same sentence…for a reason.
Approximately 165 days a year doesn’t sound like what any of us has for a work schedule.

I agree with you though, put off retirement until you’re as old as a herd of turtles? The pull of the scam is strong!

Anyone that demands McConnell step down today doesn’t understand this simple fact.

As for KY Gov Beshear appointing a Dem to an unexpired Senate term, Kentucky law passed over Beshear’s veto a couple of years ago, says that appointments have to be from the same party as the predecessor. Whether that would stand up in courts (State or Fed) is questionable as it hasn’t been tried.
