San Francisco university lays off IT workers; jobs head to India
As the comments suggest, free or reduced tuition for illegals is expensive. Got to cut the costs somewhere.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/san...039330--finance.html

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The University of California, San Francisco on Tuesday laid off 49 information technology (IT) employees and outsourced their work to a company based in India, ending a year-long process that has brought the public university under fire.

The university announced the plan last July as a way to save $30 million over five years. The University of California system, which includes health care and research-focused UCSF, has been struggling to raise revenue and cut expenses.

Globalization and outsourcing have become hot-button political issues in the United States, as more employers cut costs by farming out work to low-cost workers in far-flung parts of the world. President Donald Trump campaigned on promises to restore lost U.S. jobs and to penalize companies that move factories overseas.

This was the University of California's first outsourcing, said a spokeswoman who added that the layoffs were necessary due to rising costs of technology. In addition to the 49 staff layoffs, another 48 positions that were vacant or filled by contractors were eliminated.

California Senator Dianne Feinstein last year said the university had a responsibility to keep jobs in the United States and pledged to seek reforms to stop domestic jobs being outsourced.

Kurt Ho, 58, a laid off systems administrator, carried a box of his personal items with an American flag draped over it, and said the university's decision will hurt service for a medical staff that relies on a smoothly running and secure computer network.

"It's a downgrading of services and a slap in the face for the customers," said Ho, who has worked in IT in the Bay Area for 25 years. He said he plans to look for a job but worries that outsourcing of IT services is a growing trend.

Last year UCSF entered into a $50 million contract over five years with India-based HCL Technologies Ltd to do the work.

A growing trend? Uh, you're in IT and worried about your job headed to India? What is this, 2001?

No surprise. My company does this too, offshoring jobs steals money from American pockets and offshore cannot compete when it comes to knowledge and quality of service.

I predict less than 2 years before they start bringing the jobs back.

Verizon is already doing the same thing, it's the same story every time an employer offshores to India. Quality of Service goes down, client frustration goes up.

What's the saying? The foul taste of poor quality and buyer's remorse lingers far longer than the sweetness of low cost or something like that

I am surprised. Couldn't they raise taxes, or get Gov Moonbeam to pay for it? Maybe they can no longer avoid the law of economics.

It is curious. Lay off legal residents and give the work to foreigners, so that you can give free education to illegals.

Less than 2 years? You give them too much credit.

I've seen how these offshore companies win accounts. First, they bring in the top tier worker for the first two years. These are the ones with impeccable English, manners, pro-activeness, etc. You get impressed with them and say, "No wonder we outsourced the function."

Then they get replaced by second-tier people which are still okay. But these get replaced in turn by 3rd and 4th tier people. And by that time, you're talking on teleconferences with them and you can't understand what they're saying.

They do the things that you tell them to do but only those things because the other things that would logically follow was not expressly stated.

You say something's wrong, please fix it. They come back and say, "We fixed it. Please check and let us know if it is." You check and it's not fixed and you get the feeling they never check their own work.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Leftist logic, how else are you going going to pay for all the anchor babies?

Plus I'm sure there no Americans willing to do that kind of work. Roll Eyes

Here's the rub, as quoted from the article posted by 'fivesixfivefan'

“The argument for Disney or Edison is that its executives are driven to maximize profits,” says Ron Hira of Howard University, a expert in H-1B visas. “But UC is a public institution, not driven by profit. It’s qualitatively different from other employers.”

By sending IT jobs abroad, UC is undermining its own mission, which includes preparing California students to serve the high-tech industry.

“UC is training software engineers at the same time they’re outsourcing their own software engineers,” says Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose), whose district includes much of Silicon Valley. “What message are they sending their own students?”

UCSF is somewhat cutoff from the rest of the UC system and has rumbled about completely cutting the cord. It's the only campus that isn't infested largely because it's graduate science and medicine so there aren't a bunch of Marxist Critical X Studies bozos gumming up the works. I'm sure there's bloat given that it's state administrated but most of the funding is grant money and donations. Outsourcing IT stinks but every dollar counts. And UCSF isn't training software engineers or tech support. The politicians know this but it doesn't fit their narrative. Perhaps some money for in house IT employees and benefits could be found if so much wasn't devoted to the care of those who shouldn't be given sanctuary.

This story, including an interview with the aforementioned Kurt Ho, who's getting fired, was was on one of the news channels a few weeks ago. What I found the most noteworthy was that they were interviewing an Asian and a black guy, both of whom had lost well paying jobs at which they had years of experience. And they were made to train their replacements.

At what time do people in minority communities start seeing that liberals are not on their side? They are losing their jobs because their government is choosing to spend its money on people who are not legally in this country, and then when it can't afford it, they take the jobs from Americans--white, black, yellow, brown, whatever--and send them to ANOTHER non-American.

Do you mean, at what point will they give up their slave mindset?

Excellent question.
