Quite a few were awful because the woman was in it.

I can't really speak about today, but in my day, it seemed like there was an effort to avoid people getting an idea what to expect from marriage, how to act, caring and sharing, etc.
There were marriage prep courses, unrealistic, idealistic from what I saw.

So, you took your best shot, survived your mistakes as best you could, and hopefully so did she. If not, you lived in misery and despair.
