Gone but Together Again. Dad & Uncle |
Our bill is getting outlandish with AT&T and the taxes/fee's alone are 40-50/month. The total bill for 3 phones with unlimited data is right at $200/mo. So I've been doing some checking and found Cricket uses AT&T towers so the coverage would be great for us at home and also for our daughter who travels. Their cost including taxes/fees is $90/mo. I called AT&T's loyalty dept last night and after 1/2 hour the best they could do was $145/mo without taxes/fees. I told her that is what I was paying now. So she transferred me to the "unlocking dept" who has unlocked our phones. Am I missing anything as saving $110/mo, or a whopping 55%, sure has me very interested in leaving the mothership of AT&T.

My experience with at&t’s phone unlocking has been that they lie through their rotten teeth about having actually unlocked the phone. Repeatedly. I have no experience with Cricket, but can say that Straight Talk has ben pretty painless to deal with and cheap. And at&t can bite my ass.

Straight talk has phones that use AT&T towers. $45 a month. I suggest buying an unlocked phone and using Straight Talk.

YOUR CURRENT PHONE: If you don't owe anything on your phone, and your not in a contract with your current service, you can have the service unlock your phone. BRAND NEW PHONE: You can buy an unlocked, which also means its an unsubsidized phone which means it will be more costly to buy, phone at brick/mortar stores or online.

Pretty sure if you have AT&T now, you can just take your phones to Cricket and they'll switch you right over. Fact, they have some good bonus deals if you switch. I've been useing Cricket for 3 years now and its great service. I have the unlimited plan as a video or two seems to burn some data. I dont watch too many videos but can if I wish. Cricket Stores are everywhere now and you save a few bucks per month useing auto pay.

Cricket is GTG. Just talked to them and was told they've never seen a AT&T phone which does not work with Cricket.

Locked AT&T phones will work on Cricket. AT&T actually owns 100% of Cricket I believe. I am on AT&T prepaid - 8 GB each line with rollover, can be used in Mexico and Canada, 3 lines, paid using CallingMart - $94 total a month. AT&T prepaid runs at same QoS level as their postpaid.

I lasted less than one month with Cricket. Their customer service is - incredibly - even worse than AT&T's. I had all kinds of issues trying to do the phone unlock and their customer service people weren't just unhelpful, they were assholes. After spending a couple of hours on the phone and not getting anywhere, I cancelled and went with Consumer Cellular*. (* Consumer Cellular uses either AT&T and T-Mobile's towers. I think their default is T-Mobile, but you can request AT&T.) _____________________________________________________________________ “One of the common failings among honorable people is a failure to appreciate how thoroughly dishonorable some other people can be, and how dangerous it is to trust them.” – Thomas Sowell

I use Total Wireless, which is Verizon's off-brand. I have had very good service after one necessary call to their service group. Total is much more affordable than Verizon. I'm about to abandon my ATT grandfathered old unlimited plan as well because of the poor coverage here and high cost... Wife and Daughter are on Verizon contract 4GB shared now. I Am seriously considering paying off their phone contracts and switching all three to a verizon prepaid family plan. 30 to 45 a month per line depending on data plan... Looks like I will save 100 bucks a month by the change. Collecting dust.

First, do you honestly need unlimited data? How much data do you actually use in a month? The only way I can see anyone really benefitting from unlimited data is if they are using thier cellular carrier as their only Internet Service Provider and streaming large amounts of video/TV/movies. If that is your family, then fine. If not, you should really consider other options/plans. If you are using an iPhone, you should contact Apple to verify that the phone is indeed unlocked. Some iPhones, even when unlocked, will not work on Verizon or Sprint because they use Intel modems which do not work on CDMA. So keep that in mind when looking at options. You may also want to check out the prices of Red Pocket Mobile which you can purchase off of ebay. They have different plans which use various networks. Some of their GSM plans can/will use AT&T's network. Mint Mobile is another Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) with really good rates. But they use T-mobile's network. That may or may not work for you.

Cricket isn't going to help you unlock a phone unless they sold the phone to you. Even then it is like pulling hen's teeth. Cricket locks their phones to their network. Their phones won't even work on AT&T until unlocked by cricket. Cricket requires you to have their phone on their network for six months before they will unlock it.

Thanks. The data user is our daughter who is a senior at Roanoke College. She uses 20-24gb of data per billing cycle. My wife and I might hit 1gb data per month. Apparently the wifi at her college is, are you ready for this college term "Sketchy" at best and hence she uses the phone for internet/streaming.

Cricket IS AT&T. I use AT&T because they have the best coverage in the areas I frequent and they give me a pretty nice discount. I had Sprint for about 15 years and don't miss them at all.

I have had Cricket for 3 years. No problems in my normal life. But, about a month ago I was at Medoc Mountain State Park, which is in the middle of nowhere northeast of Raleigh near the Virginia line, and I had no signal for 3 days. People with Verizon did have a signal. I guess if you live near there you know you need to get Verizon.

So the other night AT&T unlocked 2 of our phones while I was on the line with them. She told me the 3rd line required a "case" to be submitted, we met all the requirements for it to be unlocked, and we would hear back within 48 hours. I just received AT&T's reply: Bear in mind their reply is for an Apple 5c phone I know we have had for at least 5 years. Ugh!

I know that everyone in the world hates Comcast/xfinity, but their mobile service is fantastic. They use Verizon towers. You have to be an xfinity internet subscriber to get access to their mobile plan. From there on it’s no monthly fees, and only $12 per gig, shared. If one user will top 3 gigs, you get an email telling you to switch to unlimited on that line for the month. $45 unlimited data. You can switch back and forth as much as you like. If you cancel your xfinity internet service (I had to because I moved), you have to pay a $10 per line access fee. Our phone bill for two phones usually runs between $44 and $56 a month.
