On May 4, the 364 meter long, 128,550 dwt container ship collided with quay at the Jebel Ali container terminal in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The CMA CGM Centaurus was attempting to berth when it’s starboard bow struck the quay. The vessel hit a leg of a gantry crane causing it to collapse and another crane was pushed off its tracks.

Ten people were injured during the incident. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The most junior officer, aka the "george ensign" got to be the pilot escort on the USS IOWA. Meaning, when pulling into port, a boat comes out, pulls alongside, and the pilot comes aboard.

He then gets escorted up to the bridge to con the vessel into port. You'd then escort him down to the quarterdeck and see him off after tying up at the pier.

I got to witness the Commanding Officer, CAPT Larry Seaquist relieve the pilot, who was failing to get the IOWA alongside the pier. In fact, with an offsetting wind, he was hazarding the vessel, which was in danger of moving over and hitting ships on the adjacent pier.

Pretty exciting day to be standing there, realize things were going wrong, then have the skipper state loudly, "this is the Captain, I have the deck and the con. Get him (the pilot) off my bridge". Being a true ship-handler, Captain Seaquist got us pier side safely. 4 screw and 2 rudders is a lot easier that most single screw cargo ships. lots of inertia though.

A "starboard bow"?

Is it a catamaran or do they actually mean "the starboard side of its bow"?

a couple decades in the Navy to include 8 years at sea and never heard of a starboard bow. Wink

Appears that the closer crane in the 2nd pic, which was knocked off its tracks, has also sustained a good deal of damage, based on the wrinkles on the lower part of the structure.

Depends on the company's (CMA's) policy regarding drug tests. Doesn't really matter where the accident occurs.

Or maybe they'll just behead them...

I finally watched the video. That was one of the worst attempts at docking a ship I've ever seen. It was so bad that I can't believe there wasn't a loss of steering or propulsion issue. Pure amateur hour if not.

That's what I thought, but don't they use tugs to get ships that large alongside the quay in a crowded harbor? Or is docking done only with azimuth pods today? Centaurus was launched in 2011 and has two from what I found online.

I think the local government will have something to say about this, unless the ship just pulled back out to sea and kept going.

Tugs are always used for ships like this.

ETA: I should say usually. These newer ship may have both bow and stern thrusters which might negate the need for tugs.

Tugs are typical though in most dockings.

I lol'd a bit when the ants came pouring out of the building. Not a dry pair of shorts in the bunch I bet...

Glad no one was killed...
