I purchased some ivory grips from a member here. I need to have them “cut” for an ambi safety on a 1911. Who would you send them to? Should I just have a regular safety installed? Also does renaissance wax help preserve the grips and prevent cracking? Thanks in advance and a Merry Christmas to you all!

I have a set of mammoth ivory grips on a pistol and I hope someone knowledgeable will chime in as I have been hesitant to use that wax on my grips for fear of yellowing them in time. I'd give Mike at MD Grips a call, https://md-grips.mybigcommerce.com If I remember correctly I think he had some ivory grips listed for sale a few years ago. I've had half a dozen grips made and I 100% recommend him, truly a craftsman and a gentleman who stands behind his work. He's made me Giraffe Bone Grips for a 1911 and also revolvers, which I hear is a similar material to work with comparing it to Ivory. Even if he couldn't do the job I'm sure he could point you to someone he would recommend.

I’ve a set of elephant ivory scales on my VBOB done by Sarge (sorry, lost the link). I believe his recommendation was to apply mineral oil periodically to help prevent checking. I’m not too worried about the appearance of some wear, they are a natural product after all. Got mine right before Obumer signed the ban for my fiftieth birthday, love ‘em, but a little fat around. Hope you enjoy yours and merry Christmas. "The days are stacked against what we think we are." Jim Harrison

Sarge aka Ryan Payne retired to Utila (Honduras island) several years ago. His site and company was called The Finer Grain. I have a good number of his great grips. The community misses him. Post he made on the 1911 Forum: Certifiable member of the gun toting, septuagenarian, bucket list workin', crazed retiree, bald is beautiful club! USN (RET), COTEP #192

Living the dream... nice! "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual."
