Worst Child Predator sentenced today on State charges,(update pg3 - Father of 3 victims attempts to get his due in court. Judge does not charge him)
The worst child predator in recent history was sentenced today to 40-175 years in State Prison after serving the 60 years of his Federal sentence. This follows 7 days (from the original 4) of victim impact statements that were tragic, sickening, heart wrenching, shocking, and everything in between.
The Defendant's(I'm not using his name as he is to vile for even that recognition) letter to the judge indicated that these were "treatments", medically sound, and that 'hell hath no fury like a woman scored'. That may have been re-defined for you today though the comments from the judge who was clearly not amused by his attempt to justify his guilty plea.
The State Attorney General has announced an investigation into the role that Michigan State University played in allowing this to occur, ignoring reports, and a potential cover up.
LESSONS from Victims 156 young women, and a parent of a victim who took her own life came forward and shared there stories of his abuse, the manipulation, being ignored. So what is the painfully clear lesson from all of this. There are many. 1) Don't ignore a report of molestation from a child, regardless of how well you 'know' the accused 2) If you're part of an organization and catch wind of, hear rumor about, are suspicious, or see something, you better act. 3) If you are head of an organization and this arises, you better take swift and decisive action, protecting the image of your organization through denial will come back to haunt you 4) Empower anyone who has been, or you think might be a victim to come forward and bring the predator to justice.
LESSONS from the Sentencing Hearing The judge paused the hearing to make a statement. The defendant and his attorneys had received multiple, credible threats against themselves, property and family. The judge made it very clear that the 6th Amendment guarantees all citizens of the right to competent counsel, regardless of how vile their crime may be, and to assure the system works, that must be respected. Defense attorneys need to be able to do their jobs to assure a just and fair trial, verdict, and sentence. The 1st Amendment guarantees the right to opinion, so you can think, feel, or say what you desire, as long as it doesn't violate the rights of another. That is criminal, it is where the line is crossed. Both must exist in a free society, vigilante justice does not serve society.
In the end the judge made it clear that it was her privilege and honor to sentence the defendant to death in prison. Case Closed. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Rightwire,

My prediction is he will fare poorly in prison.
Sadly - a lot of enablers need to be held accountable also. He didn't do this in a vacuum. Kinda like the Sandusky / PSU case.

Sig209, you are correct. I suspect that this will spread into the Gymnastics world and Olympic Committee before it is all done.

40 to 175 plus 60 years for child porn, justice has finally come.

First, he'll never be in state prison. He has 60 years in federal prison. Combining the fact that the feds don't have parole, and then doing the math, that's where he'll serve his sentence. This whole trial/sentencing in state court was basically just for show. As far as the disposition of this perv, it didn't change anything.
That being the case, the feds have specific prisons for sex offenders. They sent Jared Fogle to one of these. I have a strong feeling that's where he'll end up. They don't seem to mix the pervs with the rest of the offenders to cut down on violence.
So, he's in for good, but it might not be as bad as a lot of people want it to be. He'll just be one perv among many.

As a MSU grad, I only partially agree with this statement. There needs to be an independent investigation into the culpability of those in positions of power at Michigan State University WITH subpoena power, and people need to be indicted and to go to prison! At minimum the university president ought to be run off camous on a rail, the administration must be cleaned out and that jackass trustee Joel Ferguson needs to resign, amongst others. This also needs to encompass USA Gymnastics and posdibly the Meridian Township police department. This is the kind of shit that can happen when the main concerns involve projecting an image and raising funds, not ethics.

That's still not exactly right. It's 40 to 175 years in state prison for the tons of sexual assaults AFTER the 60 years for child porn in the federal penitentiary. The Feds get him first, which is why BBMW noted that he'll never* see the inside of the state prison.
*assuming he doesn't make it to 114+ years of age.

If there is this type of abuse there, let's hope they find it quickly and stamp it (and the abusers) out.

Albeit true that adding time beyond the 60 year Federal sentence was probably moot as give his age and health issues he probably won't live that long.
However it was not a show as it has set precedent for how a trial for charges like this will be handled, and leveraged a previous trial in Michigan from 2009. I have a feeling that it will also be used to push additional legal action against those responsible or who turned a blind eye to obvious abuse at MSU, local gymnastics, USA Gymnastics, other medical professionals/trainers involved the U.S.O.C.
If there was a show part, it was the victim impact statements, and I sincerely hope that the lesson from that is that more victims of other abusers still at large come forward and report to authorities. So a show with a purpose. It also impacted the defendant, and rightly so, to the point where he wrote a letter to the judge claiming it was unfair and he couldn't take it. She politely and legally told him to shut up and listen to what he did as 7 days of discomfort for him was nothing compared to the lifetime of what he did to each victim.

People like this Dr, should be tortured and disposed of. It breaks my heart so many young women were psychologically destroyed. I can’t imagine what I would do if I was one of the parents involved.

When did the abuse start, and when did the first complaints start coming in? I did a quick look at some of the articles, and the didn't say.
I would think that when the parents started hearing about it, at least some of them would have gone directly to LE about it.

Complaints went back as far as 1997 as I understand it. Law enforcement was notified, including Meridian Township police, who merely interviewed the doctor as I understand it, and Michigan State University police. There was also an internal invesigation a MSU, seeminggly a whitewash. USA Gymnastics paid off a gymnast a couple of years ago with a NDA as part of the settlement. Neither MSU or USA Gymnastics contacted the other as far as I know. Everything stinks to high heaven.
FYI.....I haven't spent a bunch of time doing a personal 'investigation' per se. This is what I ave picked up via local media.

There were two suicides associated with this whole damn thing. One was a girl who was abused and the other was a father who initially didn't believe his daughter. That's pretty damn permanent. Another abuse victim told her Dad she never told him about the abuse she suffered because she didn't want him to feel like a bad parent.

Minimizing the emotional trauma suffered by a bunch of sexually abused little girls that were stuck with regular contact with their abuser for years is really low.

They all are going to have after effects of the abuse, some sooner, some later. But all will be affected.
