And realized my first dog was a Carolina Dog. She looked exactly like this, but her coat was a bit more cream-colored.

She was a good dog, a sweet dog. We figured she was a white GSD mixed with a coyote or coy dog of some sort at the time, given her features and stature. This makes much more sense and the breed description matches my old girl pretty closely. I miss how she used to do this Sphnyx pose facing the sun and look for all the world like she was recharging her life force for hours on end in the Chihauhan desert afternoons. I never could tire her out chasing her around the yard, and she kept me safe, sleeping at the foot of my bed every night for 12 years.

My son is old enough we're thinking a dog might be the next step (he turns four in a few days) and I keep thinking of my first dog. Any other Carolina Dog owners here?

I bet she would be really good at hiding in a snow storm.

I've seen a dog like that a time or two, I thought it was some type of GSD mix, or part Dingo etc..

Now I have something to read up on tonight at work.

Here's my Carolina Dog Lady, aka American Dingo, aka Dixie Dingo, aka Native American Dog. People can't believe she is 11 years old when they first see her. Smartest dog I have ever had, a rat killer supreme, and the most in touch with nature and the wild...

I've got one, just short of 9 years. A very different sort of dog. A velcro dog for sure and very pack oriented. She is about the best dog I've ever had. Smart, funny, and the best watch dog you can get. I got her here

Beautiful girl, stiab. Your picture of her with the "kill bucket" is just like looking at my dog. The part of your quote that I bolded reminded me that ours was easily the best mouser I've encountered in a house pet, dog or cat. She left dead stuff on the back step seemingly daily. She would dig for them at the base of the rock wall, and not much got away from her.

I'm going to send you an email, as I do have a few questions. I'm starting to kick around the idea of getting a dog lately and this breed just might be a great fit for our family.

We are looking at getting one for our family as an alternate to a GSD. Love the idea of an "American Dingo" since my girls are 50/50 American-Aussie and my wife just recently became an American citizen.

Our local rescue has one that I thought about, but after reading about them, I decided she would be too active for our household.

Thanks, they are from the chicken coop area, and Lady was very methodical in her approach. We flooded the tunnels using a water hose, but would first get her to sniff each tunnel opening. If she alerted on a rat in that whole, we would flush it and she would grab the rat as it exited up through the ground. She would then shake it one time for the kill, then spit it out and be ready for the next one. Very efficient of her, no wasted time or motion.

Edited to add: I should have mentioned she is also a shed hunter supreme. The first two pictures above show her with deer antler sheds she has found. No training required, she just does it.
