I have an XBOX One S system that is 4K capable. I don’t have a 4K TV.
I bought a 4K Ultra HD movie will it play in a lower resolution or just not play?

I will eventually get a 4K TV and this disc was on a super low closeout price so I bought it to just put it on the shelf till I get a new TV.
Then got to wondering what would happen if I tried to play it.

Assuming your player currently displays on your current TV and eats the format the disc is in, it should automatically downsample the disc to whatever resolution it thinks your TV is capable of.

In other words, it should just play it.

If I had to guess I'd expect it to downconvert to the tv's max resolution.

I don't think the 4K disc will play, but 99.9999% of 4K discs fine with a 1080p disc that will play.

The player should down-convert it. Different players do this better or worse than others. The resulting quality will also somewhat depend upon the TV.

But it may not be an issue. Most of the 4k UHD discs I've bought recently included a standard BD disc in the box.

XBOX One S paired to a very nice Sony non 4K (forget the model) and the disc does not play.
It says for the use of content hook to a 4K HDR capable display.

Though the other fellas were correct. It came with the BluRay disc and an HD copy I can add to my Amazon account.

Ok, so what they means is the XBox doesn't down-convert. Interesting.

Interesting topic.

I’ve downloaded a couple of 4k movies and tried to play them using VLC on my FullHD Samsung TV and got nothing.

Do understand the Player is not smart enough to downgrade or the PC i’m using to pass the right stuff to my receiver or it to do its own magic.

Patience, the day will come.
