Recommendations for a Solar Flagpole Light? Login/Join

This is my flagpole. I put it up soon after we moved into our house outside of Cheyenne. The flagpole is a telescoping model, and for a couple of years I struggled getting my flags in at sundown anytime the wind was blowing because that puts the flagpole joints in a bind. I converted it to a lanyard (rather cleverly if I do say so myself) and I actually enjoy the ritual of putting the flags up in the morning and bringing them in at sunset.

Just recently though, I began to think that it would look pretty cool to have the flags illuminated and leave them up. I was surprised by the range of prices for a solar light. Most sit on top of the pole, under the ball (or eagle) at the top. A few are mounted on the lower portion of the flagpole and point up, usually with two lights. It's relatively easy to find several to choose from in the $30-$35 price range, but some (that look very similar) run $150 or more. The type that uses spots that shine up from below seem to be expensive. Experience with solar flagpole lights here in the community? Recommendations? Price for a good one?

Been using this one fr at least 8 years. I will try to get thename/model number when I reset the flag for Memorial Day, or sooner if possible.

I also use a 120vac LED spotlight on a digital Astronomical timer. Runs Sunset to Sunrise automaticly.

This is what I use on mine - mounted on the top and shines down. Enough to illuminate the flag, and meet the requirement, but not so bright to create a street light look. Made in the good Ol' USA

Tried solar and hated it. Ripped them out and tossed them. The solar cells don't last as long as I like, and eventually the batteries don't hold up so you get a dim light and/or light only for a few hours after dusk.

MY CHOICE: I ran low voltage 12V in my yard and my LED spotlights are bright as the sun Smile . In all cases, I shine upward from ground level. So that's different from what you may want but I don't get any street light effect. Works in all weather even when snow would have covered solar cells.

With LED you can get a lot of light from the low voltage yard lighting spotlights. Plus you don't have to be too anal about the wires compared to a 120V install since it's low voltage, so nobody cares that you direct buried the wires just a few inches below your grass. I know solar requires no wires, but I'll gladly take the trade-off.

Easy Peasy.

Radioman, my preference is for spots that shine up from flagpole to the flags. The flagpole sits out in fromt of a guest bedroom, I think light shining down, “streetlight” as you put, would be more intrusive for guests than bottom-up. Appreciate the responses.

I've had this one on my telescoping flag pole for about five years maybe more now. Works great even in snow and ice. The light spins with the flag on the pole when wind directions change so it's always keeping your flag lit up. More expensive than most you find because it works.

I got a cheap solar one at HD that mounts to the pole under the flags. Do not recommend.
It's on my list of things I need to replace/upgrade.
