I'm in Mira Mesa quite often and thankfully I haven't needed to drive this, it looks unsafe as hell. I can't see how this could be a 2 lane car street but yet I see cars parked facing different directions.

Climate Action Gone Wild: City of San Diego’s redesigned “two-lane” road angers residents

MIRA MESA (KUSI) – Believe it or not, this a “two-lane” road.

Gold Coast Drive in Mira Mesa has been redesigned by the City of San Diego, with one lane in the middle, and bike lanes on both sides.

Residents told KUSI’s Dan Plante that it’s not only laughable, but they think the new design is much more dangerous than it was before. To make matters worse, the City of San Diego didn’t consult or notify anybody in the community before they did it.

As KUSI’s Dan Plante reports, this is just the latest example of the City’s, “Climate Action Goals Gone Wild.”

Democrat San Diego City Council candidate, Tommy Hough, believes the redesign is absurd.

Plante says the Mira Mesa area is being used by the City of San Diego to experiment with their Climate Change initiatives.

The only Republican on San Diego City Council, Chris Cate, represents this area, and told KUSI he was left out of the loop about this shocking redesign.

KUSI News reached out to Mayor Todd Gloria’s office, but has yet to hear back.

KUSI’s Dan Plante took a short video driving down the road, Gold Coast Drive, which you can see below:

Hell if I know. I do find it interesting that this was done in the District of the only Republican city councilmember.
San Diego was a nice conservative place when I got here in 1984, now not so much Roll Eyes

The whole idea of mixing bicycle lanes with motor roadways is ill conceived, but this thing is just nuts. I can just see some liberal geek in city engineering designing this thing and expecting everybody who lives there to think it's the "best thing ever". When decisions are made based upon "feels" rather than logical thinking this is what happens.

I'll take a wild guess that they think it'll encourage people to ride bicycles rather than cars.

OTOH, I don't speak liberal, so I'm probably wrong.

This sounds like something the Bozo's that plan streets here would do. We have streets where the far outside (next to curb) of the street is bike lane, then a parking lane and two way traffic in the center two lanes. Most recently the the trend has been to get rid of traffic lights and put 4 way stop signs on every corner. I'm sure this is saving lots of fuel with start/stops for blocks on end in all directions. The city fathers also authorized construction of a medical building which blocks one of the major streets through the middle of town so now we have stretches of street that go from one way to two way and back to one way within a few blocks. Absolute idiocy. I think I will inform the traffic Department about this two way single lane street, we can use a bunch of these around town.

One of our local cities had a "green biking" nonprofit convince them to do a pilot program wherein the nonprofit would pay to install protected bike lanes along streets in one area as a test, and then collect surveys and data from residents as to their thoughts on the project, with an eye to rolling out out city-wide in the future.

But the nonprofit didn't have enough money to pay to actually widen the streets, so the solution they talked the city into was to simply block off a portion on either side of the two lane streets with these curb-like barriers to carve out bike lanes.

What resulted was two lanes of traffic trying to move down 1.5 lanes of street. Fine if both drivers are in small cars, otherwise problematic, especially in an area where folks love their big pickup trucks and large SUVs.

What made it even worse was that the pilot program area was adjacent to one of the busiest fire stations in the city, and fire trucks are extra wide, plus now there was no extra room left in the street into which driver could pull over to allow emergency vehicles to pass.

The nonprofit's advice was to just jump these curbs if you need to pull over to allow emergency vehicles to pass.

Community response was swift, and loud. The barriers didn't last long.

LOL
the Lincoln County "2 lane" roads I learned to drive on were barely wide enough for 1 car. If 2 cars met both would have to put 2 wheels off the pavement so they could pass. We wouldnt have known what to do with bike lanes lol. Damn, now I'm homesick lol

We call it country driving. Drive down the middle until a car comes then get over, pass, then back to middle.

Only problem i see it if a bike gets run-over in the bike lane your azz is gonna get charged.

So it's a 1-way road with 2 bike lanes, 1 going in each direction?

Or is that supposed to be a 2-way road and people have to yield to traffic and potentially hit bicyclists as they yield?

No, I don't think you are wrong. Arlington County, VA is an extremely woke community adjacent to where I live. Over the past ten years or so they have re-laned many of the through-county roads installing and widening bike lanes and shrinking or eliminating traffic lanes, while simultaneously doing away with on-street parking. This drives commuter traffic onto the major thoroughfares, exacerbating congestion and making commuting through Arlington a nightmare. They obviously hate cars, and wish they would just go away. The adjacent cities of DC, Alexandria and Falls Church appear to be following a similar trajectory. Did I mention that speed bumps, traffic circles, and other "calming" obstructions are everywhere? I haven't noticed that air quality has gotten any better, perhaps because trips that used to take 10 minutes now are 45 min. to an hour.

Wait til they come up with the brilliant idea of limiting or restricting the amount of gasoline sold to promote their progressive agenda.

It's not so much the cars themselves but rather the gasoline on which most of them operate. Disdain for fossil fuels is a key pillar of modern leftist ideology.

And in the short video there's 30-50 cars visible and not a single bicyclist.

As discussed here in the past I'm a cyclist. I wouldn't ride on that street. That's the stupidest design I've ever seen. Makes it dangerous for all.
