I see in the news that our Transportation Secretary made time in his busy schedule to visit the site yesterday. He knows absolutely nothing about transportation, roads, or bridges. So his primary concern was probably making sure the construction unions on site were employing their quota of lgbtq+.

My wife works in heavy civil construction. Their company builds roads and bridges.
She said it will be all hands on deck. They will hire companies that can get the job done as quickly as possible.

It will cost a pretty penny but I am sure big bonuses will be paid to who ever the company is that is awarded the contract to get it done as quickly as possible.
Resources may be diverted away from other non essential projects to make it happen.

From what I saw it looks like they have already started clearing away the damaged bridge.

That should be done fairly quickly, the big obstacle will be finding a competent company that has an opening in their schedule or enough crew to get the job done.

Think I'd be selling pretzels, hoagies, bottled water and access to porta potties for the traffic in those neighborhoods.

Ugh, the fire took place on my Exit from i95. I avoided it on Monday but had no choice but to approach it yesterday. Got off i95 at the exit before the final exit before the detour and it was still bad. I have to seriously consider driving thru the streets of Philly just to get home, this blows. Local Philly traffic is just *wild* compared to another civilized city.

The circle jerk of clowns at the press conference today of local officials and the governor patting each other on the back when they've barely done anything yet was something to behold. They even had the head union guy there, and I gotta say, he didn't exactly instill a whole lot of confidence in me as to the quality of worker that is supposedly going to be doing the work. But who knows? They met yet impress me.

Apparently there will be a live 24/7 feed of the worksite and their progress.

According to the governor, demo on both the North & Southbound overpasses is expected to be completed today. They will immediately start filling in the whole area & then pave a temporary roadway with 3 lanes each direction. So the exit will be unusable, but there will be a temp I95 until they build the permanent roadway.

He wouldn't give a timeline, but says it's going to be a 24/7 project. It looks like some overtime bucks for the workers, and mega millions for the unions & big construction companies.

That is actually a very creative approach to getting that freeway back open quickly. I'd be curious to see the detailed plan and schedule for that one.

I saw this discussed elsewhere and it looks like they are going to go with a variation of that. The guy I saw talking about it said basically "Fill that entire hole in with gravel then pave over it, reopen the roadway then work on fixing it incrementally"

If they can pull this off, my hats off to them.

Great another small section of 95 to be under construction for 3 years. Roll Eyes

They literally just finished this section.
95 thru Philly will be perpetually under construction.

I go out of my way whenever possible to avoid 95 in Philly.

And it’s my understanding that they are going to install some sort of 24/7 webcam on the construction project, so if it’s anything like typical Philadelphia, you’ll see five Union guys standing around watching one guy semi-working three days a week. LOL

Well I think the idea sucks. Rather than just move at full gas and get the whole project done in 6 weeks (which has been done before) , they're going to take 4 weeks or more (probably more) to build a road on a dirt pile, and then take their sweet ass time milking money from the taxpayer for a year or more repairing the actual bridge.

That's how this state operates though, it sucks.

Right down the road from me there was a crumbling bridge over a small-ish creek. You'd think that would take like 8-9 months tops? NOPE.

Over 2 YEARS. Mad The businesses nearby were freaking out they were losing so much money by it. They DGAF.

The biggest holdup will probably be getting those huge steel beams for the permanent span. How wide is that gap? 100-150 feet? And how many beams will they need for each three lane section? Two, four each? I doubt anybody keeps those in stock. They'll have to be made to specs.

It looks like the temporary fix for I-95 will be open this weekend. I live halfway across the state, so it doesn't affect me one bit, but that's a heck of alot faster than I thought it'd be done.

https://www.fox43.com/article/...ad-862c-9bb219f8bf65

Excerpt from the article:
Pennsylvania’s plan for a quick interim fix has involved trucking in 2,000 tons of lightweight recycled glass nuggets to fill in the collapsed area, avoiding supply-chain delays for other materials, officials said. After that, a replacement bridge will be built next to it to reroute traffic while crews excavate the fill to restore the exit ramp, officials said.

Shapiro said Tuesday that crews had completed pouring the aggregate into the gap to build it up to the level of the rest of the highway, and cranes were now lifting large outer barriers into place. After that, crews would begin paving and striping three lanes in each direction, he said.
