Holy crap! My boys and I were just down there on Memorial Day and had 2 airboat rides while there. I hope they can extinguish the fire without massive losses to the animals and brush.

Fighting wildland fire in Florida is a whole different ballgame. I had a number of years of firefighting experience when I first went to Florida for the "firestorms" in the late 90's, and everything from the tactics to the terminology to the fuels was different. We did fires in the swamp, but the conventional means of fighting them was out the window, and because it's water, retardant can't be dropped, backfires and other tactics are limited, access is difficult, making reaks and clearing line is difficult, and there's a lot of dangerous stuff. They don't get fires there that often, but when it does burn, the fires present some real challenges for control.
