We have a Deere Z920m 54 inch zero turn.

For you guys who have zero turn mowers, or who cut commercially, what are you using for blades? Are you sticking with OEM, or is there a brand that is good, but less pricy out there.

Thanks.

Can't say about ZT but on my traditional JD130 I run two sets, plus a mulching blade, all JD, and take them to the local ACE to get sharpened and they do a great job.

Biggest plus is keeping them sharp, that's why I keep two sets, one comes off and another sharp set goes on. Dull set back to the sharpener, once a month.

With all the sand here, that can dull a blade quickly.

Neighbor has a ZT Ego and runs factory blades, and sharpens them himself...

He's looking at getting the dual blade high lift setup.

I'm just putting around old school...

52" Gravely.

I put Copperhead Mulching Toothed blades on it and have had zero problems two years now and I cut about 7 acres about every week during heavy growth, and every other week on lighter growth. (4 and 3 month, no cut 5 months winter) $10 per blade.

Oregon/Sten G6 gator blades are the best all around blades imho, especially for mulching. G3 is a bit lighter weight and G5 is a bit heavier than G3 and the G6 is 3" wide and stout enough for heavy work.

John Deere will typically make their parts proprietary and charge extra for the green paint so be careful.

Yes, they even seem to hold their edge longer as well. The only problem I’ve ever had with them is supply. If they’re in stock, get extra because you won’t see them again.

I’ve also used Ballard. They’re good and have different styles of blades. I get them when Oregon are out of stock and I need something right away. I know that’s not a resounding positive review.

I bought a couple sets of the Ballard blades for my 60” Exmark. Very happy with them.

I have an xmark quest 42 inch. I have a dang stump that I hit every few months on accident and they bend. I load it up and take to the dealer. 58$ about for a new pair installed. easier than me spending hours trying to Jack it up and I talk new ones. Sometimes they have done it 2 hours sometimes 2 days.

Changing blades is a 10 minute job with an impact wrench and 15 minutes with a breaker bar. Before I had the jack I'd run one wheel up the trailer ramp letting most of the mower hang off the edge. Block the wheels and get'r done. I sharpen blades with an angle grinder using a flap disk and it takes about 2 minutes per blade.

+1. I use them exclusively on my 52” Turf Tiger and they handle anything the farm throws at them. Usually get away with sharpening once, maybe twice a season.

Ferris 61”.

Bought a set of Gator mulching blades.
The only difference from factory blades I can see is they make more noise.

Thanks everyone. I have been using the JD blades, and resharpening them exactly as doublesharp suggests. The biggest issue here in central Florida is that the sugar sand that underlies the grass erodes the blades very quickly, so they are really only good for first use, and one subsequent sharpening before there isn't enough steel left for the job.

A couple YouTubers I follow mow 5+ acres in Florida with Zero turns. Both get blade wear from sand.

This is interesting as he compares blade lift with cut quality and damage from sand:

This is interesting as it's head to head with a traditional blade versus a multi blade system (i.e. more cutting surface and it's a tooless system to change blades):
