Thank you Very little |
I have a few months left with DTV, thinking of moving to DTV streaming and supplementing with OTH services, hence my other post about OTH antennas. We have one ROKU, and two Firecasts The problem TV happens to be a newer 60 Inch HDTV by LG, it seems it doesn't play well with IOS, you cannot mirror from your phone to the TV using the built in Miricast application unless you buy a $40 app. While that's not out of the question, and there are less expensive apps, I'd like to explore other options. One would be to add an AppleTV box, and mirror to the box to the TV and use the $40 app cost to simply add AppleTV, use it to see Hulu, Netflix, and any other streaming services. Looking for experience/advise on the abilities of AppleTV, or if there is another option for mirror to LG. It doesn't seem to be a problem with Samsung, In addition we'll have to address mirroring on Hisense tv's as well.. Some of the apps/streaming don't work with Chromecast, which we have hardware on the LG, DirecTV app doesn't allow me to chrome cast either, so it's back to the app/apple question.

Though I cannot answer directly as tech savvy as ensigmatic or others here, I can say that you can mirror an iPhone content using Air Play and use the apps from Apple TV. I haven't used this feature yet, and would cautiously guess it's similar to using Miricast using an Android device. Here is an image taken directly from my Apple TV on screen showing the apps you can use like your stored photos and iTunes and others available from the App store. I will say that after a lot of investigating and reading of the long cord cutters thread, going back and forth and trying many of the free trials, I've settled with these apps seen in the photo. And the Apple TV works great. The remote does take a small bit of learning to use but having used the touch pad on my MacBook for several years, it was easy to get the hang of, all the finger swipes and gestures. Wish I could be more specific to your question regarding use with the Miricast app. I'm sure that ensigmatic or others can fill in with more extensive information. I highly recommend the Apple TV device for streaming though, mine works terrific and allows you a free year of Apple TV+ so you can use a lot of the apps features. Regards, Will G.

I cannot recommend the Apple TV too highly. We've had Roku (2nd Gen.), Android TV, and Fire TV devices, and the Apple TV is a better experience, IMO. Particularly if you have iOS mobile devices. Screen mirroring is built-in, trivial to use and works great. It's so convenient I now never think twice, if I see something on my tablet, of saying "Hey, honey, check this out" and bringing it up. If you're watching something else, it'll go right back to it when you're done. If you have something to type, say in a search bar, and you bring up iOS' built-in remote, it'll automatically bring up a keyboard on your iOS device to type with. When I added our 2nd Apple TV, a couple days ago, the thing really shined. It asked me if I wanted to use an iPhone or iPad to set it up. The first one did, too, but I went manual. This time I said "Sure." Held the iPad near the ATV, it grabbed the WiFi signon from the iPad and was on the network just like that. Asked if I wanted to sync home screens between it and the existing ATV via iCloud. Said "Sure, why not?" and it automatically downloaded and installed all the same apps, then duplicated the home screen. Now, if we re-arrange a home screen on one, it's re-arranged on both. Love it. Just love it. We'll be replacing all of our streamers with Apple TVs, eventually. I looked into mirroring our iThings directly to our new LG TV, before we head the first ATV. Took one look at the Terms Of Service on the LG TV and said "No way!" (To enable the "smart" features you have to essentially grant them the rights to monitor and log everything you do with the TV, regardless of source, and share it with whomever they wish.) We ended-up with the first ATV as a result of rewards points on one of our cards. The second one was paid for with the cash back on my Apple Card. So they were both free You currently get a free year of Apple TV+ with the purchase of a new Apple TV. It's got far less content than Netflix and AP, but some of their own content is starting to show up. (I've started watching The Morning Show with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. Admittedly as much because I'm in lust with Aniston as anything else , but it looks interesting. It gets very good ratings and reviews on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes.) Btw: If you're military or a veteran you can get a 10% discount at Apple. Then there's 3% cash back if you use an Apple Card. This message has been edited. Ensigmatic, I have an early Apple TV, and use it for AirPlay; but my main device is a TiVo. So I have to change the input on my (Visio) TV then use the separate Apple TV remote to engage AirPlay. Does the newer Apple TV device make the process easier? _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"

Probably not enough easier to make it worth spending $130 or more for an ATV 4th Gen. or 4K. You'd still have to manually switch from your Tivo to your ATV so you could screen cast. After that it may be easier, because I believe there's improved built-in integration between iOS 12 and above or iPadOS 13 and above, and the newer tvOS? We didn't have to install anything on either our iOS devices or our ATVs for screen casting to work. It was just there. Same with the remote control. (They're both in the iOS Control Center you swipe up [iPhone] or down [iPad] to bring up. My Apple Watch and Air Pods are likewise integrated with the ATVs.) What we have works so seamlessly for us because we use our streaming devices to stream from a networked OTA TV tuner and OTA TV DVR. So we stream OTA TV on the same device we use for Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. Now, with ATVs, those same devices enable screen casting from any of our mobile devices. Thats good intel on the AppleTV, it's a shame LG hasn't incorporated IOS mirroring when you consider the number of iShit people own. Had I known it was an issue, I wouldn't have bought the LG, so at least this might be a warning for anyone looking at new smart TV's and having IOS phone/pad devices. Run from LG, go with Samsung. I have toyed with the idea of picking up a cheap Android pad, and using it to cast stuff however that means another device to send stuff to a device because I can't send from my current device to the tv device.

I'm nearly certain our LG TV supports Apple AirPlay. As I noted, elsewhere, I declined to try it because enabling the LG's "smart" features would've resulted in what I felt to be unacceptable privacy issues.
We all prioritize differently. Mirroring from a mobile device to the TV is pretty low on our list. I'm glad we can. It's neat, but nothing without which we couldn't live So it would not have been a deciding factor for us. We chose the LG we did because it was better-suited for the environment in which the TV would be placed than were the equivalent Samsungs or anything else at the store.
That doesn't sound particularly handy. "America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system,,,, but too early to shoot the bastards." -- Claire Wolfe "If we let things terrify us, life will not be worth living." -- Seneca the Younger, Roman Stoic philosopher

Our LG has mirroring, but it's miricast, easy with Andrioid devices. You can do it on an IOS phone but you need to buy an app, $40 to $20. At least with my LG. The only mirroring that works is with Pictures and videos you have stored, I should have said that, but you can't mirror up video's you are watching in an app. Like when DTV goes out I can pick up the shows on the DTV app, but I can't mirror it to the LG to watch while the signal is out from the dish.
Agree it's a great tv and has a great picture, but like every model, there are some limits, and at the time, it wasn't important.
No it doesn't, in the meantime, it's either pay $40 so I can stream video from my iStuff or get an AppleTV. The app at least would eliminate having another device.

True, but you know how I'd vote Having ATVs on all our TVs will give us the exact same capabilities on all of them, everywhere in the house. We've got two Android TVs, two Fire TVs and a Fire Stick. I'll keep the stick, for sure. (Bought that to stream from our home networked DVR when away.) Right now I'm trying to decide whether to sell all four of the other devices or keep one of each for experimentation. "America is at that awkward stage. While checking the Youtube video above about the mirroring effects using the iPhone and Apple TV, I now see that the video I posted above uses an older iPhone or iOS in his video, and on his phone in the pull down menu he uses Air Play to mirror his phone contents. Just wanted to update my post. On my later iPhone X the pull down menu uses the "screen mirroring" button. Maybe it has to do with the iOS version also. Mine is using iOS 13.1 Great informative thread here! Regards, Will G.
