The advisory now includes So. California all the way to Alaska, with a warning to "move away from the shore and head to high ground." Possibility of 3 foot waves.

Damn. I'm two blocks from SF Bay.

Likely to be a nonevent for United States. Now only an Advisory. You will be fine in SF.

That's an impressive satellite image of the eruption, but the CNN video indicates this event occurred December 14th/ 15th. Is this a tsunami event from last month, or an ongoing event due to continued eruptions?

Apparently the surfers in the first video aren't too concerned about the Tsunami Advisory.

There was an underwater eruption near Tonga a few hours ago that prompted the warning.

Good eye. It looks to me like the titles guy at CNN mixed up his December and January.

3 foot waves? Is that a typo?

The warning states 1.4 meters, so about 3-4 feet.A tsunami is not just a wave that comes in like normal waves; it's a large area of surge that hits the shore for a longer time. Even that size wave can cause damage.

2.7 foot waves have already been reported in Hawaii. The strongest wave from a tsunami is not necessarily the first one (although the advisory for Hawaii has now been cancelled).

Appears that things have calmed down.

The bigger issue is how did Tonga fare, the island archipelago sits right on top of a super-active seismic zone. The surge looks to be around 4 feet not sure how far inland it was able to push, that's enough to destroy boats and damage harbors. American Samoa got a 2-foot tsunami surge and New Zealand is reporting water draining some of their bays as the surge ebb'd/flow'd.

Hear the sonic boom of the explosion

Here in the mainland US, looks like a handful of low-lying areas experienced some flooding, and certain areas got extra wave action.

Nothing major here, fortunately. Sirens didn’t even go off.

Glad it was not severe.

I remember having to respond to a tsunami warning out on Johnston Island back in the 1960s. The practice there was to go up to the top floor (3rd) of the barracks/quarters buildings and wait it out. Those buildings were built with breakable outer walls and solid cross walls so that rushing water could just go through the lower floors without damaging the upper story. As it happened, the tidal wave that occurred in that instance measured 3/8" (yes, inch).

Johnston Island interesting deployment. Was the government destroying chemical weapons at the time you were there?

Sorry for the thread drift.

No, that was long after I was there. I was assigned to a unit that was to launch Thor boosters with H-bomb payloads to destroy satellites. This was never actually done, but we did launch instrumented hunks of concrete to prove that the process would work. I was actually in charge of the hardware that controlled the bomb and tracked its flight, and did participate in one of the training launches. (It was successful.)

Severe enough, water shortages, airport obstruction, harbors destroyed, limited to no electricity, underwater comms cut-off...

Sorry. I was thinking of SoCal, since that was what the thread was about.
