Going through some old pics...
Grandpa was in the Navy for almost all of WW2
He’s in the middle, I’d guess they were on a pretty good drunk somewhere!
Phillipines after the war maybe? Seems like a tourist set up.

He told me a few good stories over the years.
Got in a big bar fight with Marines and arrested, missed his ship the next morning, finished the war out on a minesweeper.

He was 13 of 14 kids, most of the boys were over 6ft. I guess that was pretty tall for back then.

Here’s one on the day he received his draft notice, he told my older cousin that they wanted a pic of him before he left.

Here’s one in uniform (on the left), my middle brother looks a lot like him now that I look at some these pics again

That is just too cool! A thousand words is no where near enough to tell the story of these pictures!

Thanks to our grandfather for his service.

He's been gone for around 10 years now I guess, my dad passed away last Saturday and I was going through pics for the memorial service.

The last couple years grandpa was with us, I would stop by after work occasionally (not often enough I now realize) and talk to him. We would watch a documentary on TV, and if it was WW2 related he would actually tell me a few stories. He never talked about it much before.

Apparently he was an AA gunner on a destroyer for most of the war, and saw action in a lot of major battles.

I can't make heads or tails out of the first picture. Looks more like Hong Kong than the Philippines.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
