I need to replace all my outdoor/garden hoses and I recall some discussion a few years ago about making your own hoses? There was a member here that swore by making all his own up, I think he said you’d buy boiler hose?

Does anyone recall these discussions? I’d love to learn how to build my own hoses.

I have had good use with the contractor 3/4 inch:

I don't leave the hose laying out in the sun. Some of the hoses are 14+ years old. I still have some 3/4 hoses from 1984.

Maybe it was steam hose that was what this member used? All I remember was that he said making up your own hoses was the way to go.

There should be a company near you that makes hoses off all types. Hydraulic, air handling, etc etc etc. we have a lot around here due to the oil field operations. They’ll have rolls and rolls of all types, quality fittings etc.

Google “custom hoses and supply near me”

It’ll cost more than the crap at wallymart etc but will be of much better quality (and the fittings as well) and exactly what length and diameter you want and last and last for many years.

There are also internet website companies that do the same and ship to you.

These companies cater to fire departments, drop by your local firehouse and ask them who they use. These will be the best quality hoses you can buy. It wouldn't hurt to contribute a couple of six packs to get the firemens' attention (not Bud Light!)

If you are dead set on making your own, using crimped compression fittings is a must, so much better than the screw band type.

^^^That’s my recollection. A little more specifically, we are supposed to search out the old guy who has been working at the industrial hose supplier and he’ll make hoses that’ll last a lifetime.

I don’t remember a thread about making own. I wonder what the compression fittings and tools cost as I have several hoses that are leaking at the fittings.

It looks like brass ferrules are a buck a piece, you’ll need the appropriate die size, but the dies seem to be about $35 each and you’ll need a way to squeeze the die halves together. A large bench vise might work.

PA, I'd be happy to offer an instant karma on 100' contractor hose if your travels take you close to PA TP 298. If I recall from the member map some time back, might be possible. Email in profile.

It's old school heavy but tough.

I’m a big fan of putting frost proof spigots and PEX to convenient locations, and smaller hoses, kept on covered reels.

It wasn’t that much more expensive, and a heck of a lot less headache, once it’s done.

One of the threads on hoses with brand recommendations and suggestions for getting a hose made:
Not the season, but what do we like for a garden hose?

Earlier thread:
Garden Hose - As in, why so hard to find a decent 75' hose

Hope this helps you get additional details...

I don't get any of the references to Garden Hose and Fire Departments. They simply do not use any of it with the possible exception to washing the trucks and guess what they buy that locally at Home Depot or Ace or whatever. There is not a chance on the planet you will get advice on some special hose at a FD for garden hose. Hose comes in just about every possible combination of strength, pressure, construction type, and a million other factors. On a custom basis you can get whatever of those you want. Not a chance that makes any sense for anyone looking for garden hose. just go to your local Home Depot and buy a high quality hose.

From the thread first thread klstclair linked above:

I find that, if you want a decent hose that will last, go to the local fire fighting supply in your town. There will be an old guy who has worked the counter there the last 80 years who will be glad to make up a sturdy 5/8" or 3/4" I.D. reinforced rubber garden hose for you in whatever length you want with nicely-machined brass fittings (aluminum fittings suck, and lots of commodity products I have seen have poorly engineered GHT {Garden Hose Threads}) for a surprisingly high price. These hoses last forever, I still have one that is like new after more than fifty years in the field.

Find a local rubber supply house and get them to make up a hose with machined brass ends.

It won't be the cheapest solution. However I have one that has lasted 45+ years and is still going strong. Mine is made from 150 lb. rated steam hose.

There’s the old guy at the supply house I remembered and then the steam hose you remember.

I wonder if construction supply houses would have stuff like that. When construction guys pump water, they don't get their hoses from Home Depot.
