Amazing how much difference a spout makes. Piece of shit EPA spouts killed the cheap 5 gallon jugs, $15 bucks brings them back to life.
I use this type

Ethanol-free gas is widely available in most areas of the country. That's all I put in my lawn equipment or fuel storage rotation.

Around here, it's only about 10-15% more than standard gas.

I do the same, bought a 5 gallon can that ONLY ethanol-free gas goes in and I have a Wawa nearby with the stuff. That's the only thing I put in my mower and snowblower.

I've left them with gas in the tank over the off season for both and they always merrily fire right back up for me.

If you don't have ethanol free, get some Startron fuel treatment, it's at any auto store, Lowes, Home Depot, Ace or similar.

Add a bit of it to the can after you fill and it will help stabilize the fuel and extend the time you can store fuel.

You should also add it to any fuel in any gas powered items like a generator and run it for a bit to get the treated fuel into the lines and carb.

The Wavian cans are so expensive now because they must ship with an EPA approved spout for each can, which is almost as expensive as the can. This is stupid because you really only need one spout even if you have ten cans. Because of government rules, you’ll now have ten spouts for your ten cans. This really drives up the cost.

If you’re just dying to have NATO cans (which you should be), your best bet is to go surplus. Go to a place like Coleman’s and get surplus cans. I purchased about eight Bundeswehr surplus cans. They were covered in all kinds of German military stickers, which was kind of cool, but they were otherwise in fine shape.

Coleman’s will occasionally offer cans in varying condition. Many times they will have been stored outside, so will be dirty on the outside, but look great inside. Here’s an example of one of their current offerings:

https://colemans.com/nato-military-jerry-can

As with the Wavians, shipping can be a bit if ordering just one, so try to get four at least to average out the cost. Sometimes Coleman’s has shipping sales. I haven’t ordered in awhile because I already have thirty or so NATO cans, and I wish to stay married.

That might be worth taking a chance on. I don’t intend to travel with them, just be able to keep 2 or 3 stored in the shed.

I bought ten of 'em from a website posted here some years ago. "British" something or another. They were spendy then too, but worth the money. In addition, I have a few I inherited from dad that are 50s-60s vintage with screw on lids. All of which are kept full with ethanol free and Stabil.

I read somewhere recently that a study was done with Stabil and it was found that it did no good...if any. Either way, I've used gas out of those cans that is five years old and my stuff runs just fine on it, so I'll keep doing what I'm doing.

My experience with Wavians has been great. I store regular unleaded (10% ethanol) in them for months with no degradation. They seal very well.

I did purchase a bunch of gaskets to reseal the neck.

It took me years to find a place to buy Mon ethanol gas. Finally found a Wally World that has it. It’s 40 miles away but they have it.

I have the old style military gas can but need a spout for it. I have the screw on cap but no spout. It looks like I would have a different spout that the one shown on the Wavian can.

I saw a video where PRI-G was way better than Sta-Bil for long-term storage.

Okay somebody set me straight on the Wavian spouts. Which ones do I want? I don’t want all that CARB crap, and I’m willing to buy plenty of replacement seals because I don’t want gas leaking. It needs to be able to pour into my cars fill neck though. I’d like to give those old cans from Coleman’s a shot. I just want a few bulk 5 gallon cans to keep in my shed. I’ll transfer fuel to 2.5 gallon no spill cans for mower/snowblower/generator duties, and I’ll use the 1.25 gallon no spill cans for chainsaw/string trimmer etc. duty as I already have those cans. When the fuel is getting too old for my liking, I’ll pour it in my car from the Wavian’s and refuel the cans. I have no interest in holding a 5 gallon can for 4 minutes to empty them into my car.

I would be interested in a spout for an old military 5-gal gas can as well. I inherited one from Dad, but the flexible spout is really leaky. The can may be > 75 years old.

If you're not in a hurry, keep an eye open at estate sales. I picked up a couple of "Eagle" 5 gallon cans for three bucks each. They were blue and one had a couple of gallons of diesel fuel in it. Most gas stations I went to didn't bat an eye when I filled them up with gas, but an attendant at Costco gave me a lecture about painting them red, it being a Michigan law and all.

I decided to obey the law but didn't want to permanently alter them so I bought a roll of red duct tape and covered them entirely. To be sure, I wrote "GASOLINE" on the taped covering.

I still have about half a roll of the tape left.

I think my question got lost in the thread somewhere. Can somebody tell me what I should be looking for as far as nozzles for the Wavian cans?

That's the exact articulated metal spout I use on my cans.

More robust than the black plastic ones.

Keep in mind that it does have a rubber gasket on the inside of the area where it connects with the can, which can eventually wear out or crack with age and long storage.
