Based upon the experiences people have recounted in this thread, it would seem it doesn't matter whether or not a device or some equipment is on and in use when lightning strikes, only that it is plugged in to an electrical circuit. Seems the only guaranteed protection is to be unplugged.

Well that's pretty inconvenient, isn't it?

Well , yeah I guess it is . There are hundreds of different devices that are claimed to protect against lightning strikes but there are way too many variables for anything to be a sure thing . Buy the best that you can afford but don't ever think that you are 100% protected .That's what insurance is for .

My newer TV was knocked out, the older stereo receiver plugged into the same wall plug was ok. I suspect the TV may have been knocked out by by an EMP surge rather than through the wiring. Power strip ok.

Can’t figure why the dryer is out but not the washer. Bought together as same brand complementary models.

We had lightning strike a 97 foot oak tree about 60 feet from our house. It stripped the bark from the tree, quite an explosion! I know the height of the tree because several years later I had to pay to have it taken down.
The current traveled along the root structure and left visible paths in the ground. Took out everything plugged in in our downstairs room and one outlet. I just happened to be looking out the upstairs window when the strike occurred! It wasn’t really storming much either.

lightning is weird,

years ago, a storm came up, sun was shining and it started pouring down rain,

raining cats dogs and small farm animals, sun shining brightly, and suddenly a lightning bolt hit a tree maybe 50 feet behind the house,
wife and I was watching TV, and saw it hit the tree right behind house,
big clap of thunder, scared the shit our of both of us,

had to reset the modem for the Cable to work, and other than a soon to be dead tree (bark was tossed by the lightning over the 2 story house into the front yard, all we lost was the modem on the desktop,

oddly enough, lighting hit a tree less than 100ft away a few years later and kilt it too, with a very distinctive loss of bark from the top to bottom where the current ran,,

no problems then,

We saw a strike across the street and it fried everything plugged in at the neighbors house. It hit the pad mounted transformer behind their house. They were upset that their $4 surge protector didn't stop the 100 million volt surge that jumped across 2 miles of open air to the ground by their house. Go figure.........

I was working in this lookout tower when it took a direct hit one evening. In about a month it'll be 40 years ago...where did they all go?

Them shutters were made with 2X12s and they were turned into splinters. All of the windows were blown out. Me? I was sitting in a wooden chair with the legs inside of shot glasses on the floor. I soiled myself.

Not many things scare me. Lightning is one of them.

I'm really careful with my ham antenna(s). If there's even a threat of thunderstorms I unplug the coax outside even though I have lightning arresters and they are well grounded.
