12 years to the day since we brought him home, he passed on the front porch of our barn after welcoming his mistress back from her horseback ride.

He looked up at her as she came in, decided she was safe, and let go of life.

He was found in a box on the side of the road, at night, with his two siblings, one of whom had already been hit and killed by a car. We adopted him; the size of a football and full of worms. He always had hip troubles as he grew too quickly, and for the last 6 months, we have had to lift his butt end if he was on a slippery floor.

He made being lazy look easy.

He was kind, honest, friendly, loyal, and protected his mistress right up to the end.

He is buried in the corner of the Jump Field, next to his horse buddy Karma.

We have lost 4 animals in less than 12 months, and I am utterly bereft.

We shall miss him terribly.

The day we brought him home:

In his prime:

Later in life:

"I vowed to myself to fight against evil more completely and more wholeheartedly than I ever did before. . . . That’s the only way to pay back part of that vast debt, to live up to and try to fulfill that tremendous obligation."

Alfred Hornik, Sunday, December 2, 1945 to his family, on his continuing duty to others for surviving WW II.

My wife and I are dog people, always had at least one (even had a cat that had been abandoned by the foreclosed neighbors when they left). We always loved 'em completely and gave them the best home and care we could. That final parting is the hardest and I hope we see them all in Heaven.

I wish the same for you.

I'm very sorry for your loss Artie. It's the worst part of having a pup. If only they could live as long as we do.

I'm sorry, Artie. Lucky was a good boy to the very end.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

I'm sorry for your loss. We love them, they become a part of the family, and we grieve their loss. But dogs are worth it.
