mike56Confused on this type of scam?
I have put up a few pistols on armslist, for sale. Local only. AZ laws must be followed. Never have an issue.
Contact is call/text to my cell. On 2 occasions now, the text says it will send me a google id number and that will prove my ad is real.
I never play along and simply delete the texts, unopened.
Just curious, what's the scam if I played and sent the number?

AeteoclesThey use the verification code to create a fake fight voice phone number associated with your phone. They use the fake number to them scam other people or to sell it to others who want to use to for other fraud.

selogicI've listed items on Facebook Marketplace and have had people ask me for my phone number to verify my ad or some such bullshit . We're talking about a $15 item . You don't need my phone number or address . Meet me at a public place and buy the item . If that's too difficult for you , just move on .

83v45magnaSounds like there is never a time when someone asking you to produce that number is kosher.
Wonder what would happen if you just sent a made up number with like formatting? Would it waste their time?

I give out the local non emergency PD number when they ask to verify the account.

This. My SIL and niece both got scammed one after each other. Same scammer. No financial harm done, but goodness ... When a two-factor authentication is sent to you via text and the message
includes "Don't share this code with anyone..." people should follow such advice.
