slabsides45I find that potassium helps some, but not that much. I still take one, but that's it. Magnesium, on the other hand, works pretty well for me. If I can remember to take 500mg or so per night, I sleep cramp free. YMMV.

ensigmaticTry magnesium supplementation.
250mg every other day has relieved the problem for me everywhere except the soles of my feet.

220-9erMore fluids and electrolytes when it's hot and I've had a lot of exercise seems to be the only remedy so far. I don't have and sodium or heart issues so some salty items seem to help too, washed down with liquids.
You may have to take an extra pee break at night but that's better in my opinion than waking up to leg cramps.

FlashlightboyI've been taking magnesium supplements for a few years and it makes a difference. I rarely get leg cramps anymore however I started taking it for recovery after doing boot camp workouts.
A marathoner buddy gave me the tip and it truly works, at least for me.
The brand I use is Doctor's Choice from Amazon. They have several different forms of it and the one that seems best for me is the Lysinate Glycinate formulation.

straightshooter1I have to take Furosimide-80mg per day. It is a "Water Pill" and it makes me pee like a...I don't know what.
As a result I get some pretty bad cramps in my legs, my groin muscle, my neck and other places. Though I take potassium and magnesium to counteract the effect of the potty pill, I still get the cramps.
What helps is that we always keep a bunch of bananas on the kitchen counter. When I get a cramp at 2 in the morning, I stumble out to the kitchen, gobble down a 'nanner, and in a few minutes the cramp is gone. On a few occasions it takes two 'nanners, but it will soon work.
BTW, I hate the taste of bananas.

SigmundPotassium gluconate pills like these work for me.

corsairEat a banana and increase your fluid intake.
While bumping up your potassium and magnesium will help, you need more fluid to help push it through and get it into your muscle tissue.

Have you tried massaging magnesium oil directly onto your feet right before bed?

Same here. I was getting cramps at night, which made it difficult to sleep. The wife started giving me a magnesium supplement and the cramps ceased.

BytesPotassium supplements really helped me out. I was waking up 3 or 4 times per night with leg cramps. I never seem to get them during the day.

2PAKWhat works for me, within about 2-5 minutes, is to open a can or little bottle of Tonic water sold at Safeway or whatever. I pour it over a couple of ice cubes and drink. Pretty quick relief. I used this method after long days on my Harley to Sturgis, long days on the plane or car or standing at the range for hours on end. It always works. In the old days, I could get a prescription for Quinine pills but they stopped allowing those so Tonic water is my go to these days.

urbanwarrior238Luckily I get lag cramps/spasms infrequently. But, when I do I press my pointer finger (horizontally) to that area under my nose and above the lip and press inward to the back of my skull and for what ever reason, it alleviates the leg pain. I might have even heard this tip here in the forum years back.

KarpteachMagnesium has helped me tremendously. I used to get cramps many times a night. I found the Magwell brand (Amazon) has helped me the most. I take one every night and I sleep in peace.

cparktdI take Magnesium for restless leg syndrome and it helps. It must also help for cramps by the responses here.
It helps relax the muscles.
Package says take 4 a day but no further instructions. 4 at a time? 1 every 6 hours? ?
So I just take two before bed, and get up and take one or two more if I can't go to sleep for a while or my legs get restless.
83 mg Magnesium Citrate per gummy
I get the 240 count from Amazon.
