Someone would have to be actually listening when the implosion happened...but whether or not it would be heard would depend on salinity and temperature conditions (as corsair alluded to above). Strong haloclines or thermoclines can prevent sound from reaching different depths, and can trap sound in channels (sound channels).
The sound of the vessel breaking up would be very distinctive, and would not be mistaken (most likely) for biologic sources (and I've heard them all!) by a novice listener, and certainly not by a trained listener.
The key would be actually listening at the time of the event with quality hydrophones (at appropriate depths) and quality processing equipment-which I have no knowledge of whether ships in the area possess.

If they found a debris field then the end was insanely fast, brutally violent, but insanely fast. They likely had no idea what happened.

USCG just confirmed the worst. Debris field found about a third of a mile from the bow of Titanic. Distribution pattern consistent with a mid-descent implosion.
How many times did they go down to the Titanic in this thing? How many times was it stressed to pressures at 4,000 meters of water? I'm no submarine guy, but it seems to me repeated stresses of that magnitude would gradually weaken the vessel to the point of this tragic accident happening. One might think the sub shrank a little on every voyage to the Titanic.

This is a great example of what happens to people who think they know more than the experts, and feel they can use short cuts to save money.
Based on what I've heard on videos from a few involved that sub never should have left shore much less the deck of that ship.
All of those testing procedures, processes, design criteria, and redundancies built into modern submarines are there as a result of failures, many catastrophic. The Sub Safe program wasn't developed so the US Government could spend more money.

DrDan would be better at explaining this than I am, but from work I did with him on engineered carbon composite structures, my understanding is that when a carbon fiber laminate fails, the failure is almost instantaneous. Unlike ductile metals, CF structures don't bend, deform and then fail. Rather, a crack initiates at either a weak point, or the point of greatest strain, and then that crack propagates through the structure at extraordinary speed leading to complete and total failure of the part. When hydraulically testing composite strips, the lab is evacuated so people don't get hit with the bits after failure.
My guess is that the crew did not have any warning that this was coming, and that it came so fast, they would have had no ability to process the event.

It's sad that these people lost their lives, but I wish the media would stop calling this an "expedition," rather than what it was, which is a joyride and an ill-conceived one at that. The Titanic was discovered decades ago and the trip they were taking was for the purpose of gawking, not conducting any kind of scientific research. They were not explorers, no matter how much they spent on the trip.

That's one of the shortcomings traveling to these depths and beyond, material fatigue and degradation is a very real issue. Inspections have to be constant and the logging of all the components involved and their exposure, must be relentless. Plenty of accidents were a result of a bolt/seal/screw failing.

...And James Cameron weighs in on the tragedy, and most critically. At the end of the interview he hints that Titan is believed to have first dropped its ballast weights, meaning the crew had some prior indication of the imminent danger.
