US Tariffs Top $31 Billion in August, a New Record High

Last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Trump’s tariffs could exceed $500 billion a year—higher than his initial $300 billion estimate.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Sept. 2 in a post on X that tariff revenues exceeded $31 billion in August, setting a new record high.
The Treasury’s latest Daily Statement showed $31.37 billion in tariff revenue as of Aug. 29, totaling $183.56 billion in the fiscal year to date.
Bessent wrote on X: “Now that August is in the books, tariff revenues topped over $31 billion in the month: a new record high. As collection continues to grow, the Trump Administration is fixing the financial shambles it inherited.”

Last week, the Treasury secretary said that President Donald Trump’s tariffs could exceed $500 billion a year—higher than Bessent’s initial $300 billion estimate.

“I think we could be on our way well over half a trillion, maybe towards a trillion-dollar number. This administration, your administration, has made a meaningful dent in the budget deficit,” Bessent said on Aug. 26.

Last month, the Congressional Budget Office, a nonpartisan budget watchdog, projected that Trump’s tariffs could lower the budget deficit by about $4 trillion over a decade, comprising $3.3 trillion in lower primary shortfalls and $700 billion in reduced interest costs. This is up from the previous estimate of $2.5 trillion.

Court Rules on Tariffs

Minimizing the trade deficit between the United States and its global partners has been a key pillar of the president’s trade policy. On April 9, Trump announced that dozens of countries would be subject to reciprocal tariffs to correct what he has described as unfair trade practices at the expense of the United States.

In the months that followed, the White House worked with partners—including the EU, the UK, China, and Japan—to sign bilateral deals before the Aug. 1 deadline for the import taxes to come into effect.
Last week, a federal appeals court determined that most of Trump’s tariffs are illegal.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled 7–4 on Aug. 29 that the president had overstepped his authority under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

“The statute bestows significant authority on the President to undertake a number of actions in response to a declared national emergency, but none of these actions explicitly include the power to impose tariffs, duties, or the like, or the power to tax,” the court stated.

The import taxes will stay in place until the decision comes into effect on Oct. 14, allowing the White House time to appeal the decision at the Supreme Court.
Trump responded in a Truth Social post that ending the tariffs “would be a total disaster for the Country.”

“It would make us financially weak, and we have to be strong. The U.S.A. will no longer tolerate enormous Trade Deficits and unfair Tariffs and Non Tariff Trade Barriers imposed by other Countries, friend or foe, that undermine our Manufacturers, Farmers, and everyone else. If allowed to stand, this Decision would literally destroy the United States of America,” he wrote on Aug. 29.
Supreme Court Review

On Sept. 2, Trump said his administration will ask the Supreme Court on Sept. 3 for an expedited review of the ruling.
“Without the tariffs, this country is in serious, serious trouble. We’ve taken in almost $17 trillion of investment [which] is coming in. Most of it is coming because of tariffs,” the president told reporters.

Bessent said that if the Supreme Court does not uphold the president’s use of the IEEPA, there are other means the White House can use to implement the import taxes.
“I’m confident the Supreme Court ... will uphold the president’s authority to use IEEPA. And there are lots of other authorities that can be used—not as efficient, not as powerful,” he said.

He also said that the U.S. trade imbalances could have consequences for the economy.

“We’ve had these trade deficits for years, but they keep getting bigger and bigger,” Bessent said. “We are approaching a tipping point ... so preventing a calamity is an emergency.”

DC Sues Trump Admin Seeking to Stop National Guard Deployment

National Guard troops have been assisting law enforcement in the District of Columbia since Trump mobilized them on Aug. 11.

WASHINGTON—The District of Columbia sued the Trump administration on Sept. 4 over its deployment of the National Guard to the nation’s capital.

The lawsuit alleges that the deployment violates the district’s semi-sovereign status known as Home Rule, where the city has jurisdiction over its own affairs but Congress can override its decisions.
“In so doing, he has run roughshod over a fundamental tenet of American democracy—that the military should not be involved in domestic law enforcement,” the lawsuit states, referring to President Donald Trump.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.

Appeals Court allows Florida's 'Alligator Alcatraz' detention center to continue operations

https://justthenews.com/govern..._campaign=newsletter

Afederal appeals court on Thursday blocked a lower court order that ordered the Trump administration to close down Florida's "Alligator Alcatraz" detention center within 60 days.

Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an emergency order to repurpose the old Dade-Collier Training Airport into the detention center in the Florida Everglades earlier this year, which is expected to hold up to 5,000 people.

U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams determined in her preliminary ruling last month that the facility can remain operational for now, but barred the administration from installing any additional industrial-style lighting and expanding the facility.

The Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security asked the Eleventh US Circuit Court of Appeals to stay Williams' ruling while the appeals process plays out.

“After careful consideration, we grant the defendants’ motions and we stay the preliminary injunction and the underlying case itself pending appeal,” the three judges wrote in the order, per CNN.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier praised the decision in a post on X, claiming the ruling was a "victory ... against an activist judge."

"The 11th Circuit not only blocked Judge Williams’ order to close Alligator Alcatraz, but they blocked her from proceeding with the case until the appeal is complete," the state attorney general wrote. "A win for Florida and President Trump’s agenda!"

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/ne...rename-Pentagon.html

President Donald Trump will sign an executive order renaming the Department of Defense on Friday to its former namesake.

The president and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have indicated in recent days that they want to change the name of the agency back to the Department of War, as part of the president's 'warrior ethos' campaign within the Pentagon.

A White House official has since confirmed that Trump will roll out the name change on Friday in an executive order that calls for the term 'Department of War' to be used as a secondary title to the Department of Defense and terms like 'Secretary of War' to refer to Hegseth's position.

The order also instructs Hegseth to propose legislative and executive actions to make the name change permanent.

Implementing the executive order will now require the federal government to change its websites, as well as signage at the Pentagon - including changing the name for the press briefing room to the 'Pentagon War Annex,' a White House official said.

The United States had called its military agency the Department of War up until 1949, when it was changed in accordance with the National Security Act of 1947 to the Department of Defense.

But Trump has suggested he would like to change the name back.

'Everybody likes that we had an unbelievable history of victory when it was Department of War,' he told reporters on August 25. 'Then we changed it to Department of Defense.'

Hegseth has also expressed his support for the name change, and has even started referring to himself as the Secretary of War.

'We won WWI, and we won WWII, not with the Department of Defense, but with... the Department of War,' he said in an interview Wednesday on Fox & Friends.

'As the president has said, we're not just defense, we're offense.'

Hegseth added that the president has 'reestablished at the Department the warrior ethos.

'We want warriors, folks that understand how to exact lethality on the enemy. We don't want endless contingencies and just playing defense,' Hegseth said.

'We think words and names and titles matter. So we're working with the White House and the president on it,' he added.

It remains unclear whether the name change will require Congressional approval, as the legislative branch has the constitutional authority to establish federal departments.

But Trump has expressed his confidence that he doesn't need Congressional approval - and if he does, lawmakers will get in line.

'We're just going to do it,' the president said in his remarks on August 25. 'I'm sure Congress will go along if we need that. I don't think we even need that.'

It seems President Trump already has the support of Republican Utah Sen. Mike Lee, who introduced a bill on Tuesday to change the name of the department.

'I'm proud to introduce the Department of War Restoration Act to make President Trump's return to tradition permanent in federal law,' he said, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

'It should always be clear to anyone who would harm our people: American's don't just play defense.'

Lee also declared on social media that the Department of War is 'the only name that captures the full range of America's military capabilities.'

Huh? If you are going to rename, then rename. What’s this “secondary” nonsense?

I hope those Autopen pardons will be ruled invalid. That won’t happen unless the DOJ submits a request to the SCOTUS. Or perhaps prosecutes Hunter, or some other pardonee, forcing a SCOTUS decision.
