F4 pilot, my cousin, funeral 2/10
Pat Arwood, F4 pilot, flew combat missions from the USS Midway in Vietnam. One confirmed MiG kill. If you’ve watched the History Channel series “Dogfights” then you’ve seen him. His confirmed kill mission was featured on the episode “MiG Killers of the Midway.”

Pat was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s several years ago and succumbed last week to this horrible disease. He was a great guy and will be sorely missed. If you’re so inclined, a toast or a prayer would be greatly appreciated for this warrior and gentleman.

My condolences, Sir. Sounds like someone I'd have enjoyed meeting.

A toast and a prayer for an American patriot. Mr Arwood sounds like a true hero. I'm sorry for his passing.

may he rest in Peace.

In early 1968 the war dejeur had turned into battalion sized operations and air support was a blessing. More than once I watched them come in hot fast and low drop a greeting while we could see tracers coming in on 'em. So after the first strike they turn around ad do it again, waggle wings and haul out, Navy and Marines both, indistinguishable, courageos as all get out.

i'm putting this in here for you to know his mission was deeply appreciated and whatever sea stories he told you were true, mostly. I'd be disappointed if they all were.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Up, up the long delirious blue, I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace where never lark nor ever eagle flew.
And while with silent lifting mind, I've trod the high un-trespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

It doesn't seem like it was that long ago, but Vietnam veterans are getting up in years and starting to leave us. My older brothers (one Army, one Air Force) are in their late 70s.

Thank you for that picture. My mom still has the newspaper article from the Lynchburg paper when the story was first reported.

I’ll drink a toast to him this afternoon. From one Naval Aviator to another.

You're right. I have seen him. That picture that p220cop posted is a good way to remember him. Look at that grin.
Prayers for the family.

While flying MiG Combat Air Patrol near Kep Airfield in North Vietnam, two of the squadron’s F-4B Phantoms engaged two MiG-19s. Lieutenant Henry A. Bartholomay and his RIO, Lieutenant Oran R. Brown, shot down the first MiG with a Sidewinder. A few seconds later, their wingman, Lieutenant Patrick E. Arwood and his RIO, Lieutenant James M. Bell, shot down the other MiG with a Sidewinder.

A toast you sir, as you fly west to join your fellow Chargers. Cheers!
