I made my disdain for the EU quite clear, but overall it was a very cordial discussion. Despite his socialist bent, he and I actually get along very well. I just hope he'll see the light one day.

Germany is one of the major economic and military powerhouses in Europe right now. It wasn't intended to be that way, but it is what it is.
When the EU gets itself stabilized, Germany is the one that will be calling the shots. As the United States divests itself of more of the burden of defending Europe the EU will start flexing more of its muscle as it becomes less dependent on us and more dependent on their EU members. This EU is going to be quite formidable. Throw in a charismatic German leader and the fourth reich will be off and running.
Every day the EU is becoming more independent and this talk of Sovereignty is just the lastest example.
