Pistol ejection height Login/Join
Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do.

Building a screen to stop flying brass from semi auto pistols. From the level of the gun how much rise does the average pistol brass have?
Using a 8x10 tarp on a frame and trying to figure out how tall to make.
Trying to save myself a trip to the range just to figure it out.

Edit to add:
I am going to start pistol shooting inside my pole barn and the screen is to prevent brass from flying all over everything and make for easy clean up.

G19 BTF was my first thought.
I've never really put much thought into it when shooting.

Recommend placing pistol threads in pistol subforum.

Brass trajectory is NOT universal, and depends on cartridge energy and case design.

In WW 1, they put the brass catcher AT the ejection port of the 1911, as anywhere else the cases would be free to strike the plane.

Yes, guns & types of loads will vary. I like when they go out of the way, to the right. One easier solution is to dress defensively while shooting, at least until you see the trajectory.

Don’t be ‘that guy’ he shot himself while dancing around with hot brass down his back.

I bet that most of us have had that happen. When it does I just ignore it, only burns for a second and it's a pretty minor burn. So this little girl need to learn how to Man Up and just ignore it.

I've stopped counting.

I have a pistol that does that, about every other round right in the noggin, I always forget which one it is until the next time I take it to the range.

I taylored my 38 Super loads that run in my S&W DK so that they land in a bushel basket.

No screen necessary with that one.

Piling on the above;
They are all different. And different loads in the same pistol will eject differently.

I had a Norinco 1911 back in the 90’s that ejected perfectly. You could put a bucket one step to the right and two steps back and the majority of brass would hit it.
My SiG P220 in 10mm throws hot loads into the next ZIP code. But weak loads just kind of dribble out at my feet.

My Ruger GP100s eject the most consistently; right at my feet. Big Grin

Trial and error! Shoot a few rounds and adjust accordingly.
